The Airports in Koa and Kahului
Kona International Airport at Keāhole (KOA) is the main airport on the Island of Hawaii and is located about seven miles northwest of Kailua-Kona. KOA has two passenger terminals and ten gates. Three airlines fly from Koa to Kahului, including Hawaiian Airlines, Island Air, and Mokulele Airlines. Flights between the two cities are available nearly every day, and both Hawaiian Airlines and Mokulele offer direct flights.
Kahului Airport (OGG) is the primary airport on the island of Maui and has one terminal. Located just three miles east of downtown Kahului, the airport has ample ground transportation options just outside baggage claim. You could take the Maui Airport Shuttle from the airport to numerous hotels and resorts, or you could opt to take a taxi. The Maui Bus is available with limited service. If you prefer to avoid public transportation, you could rent your own car.
What to Know When Departing from KOA
Kona International Airport recommends checking with your airline to determine what time you should arrive before your flight, although the TSA suggests arriving at least 90 minutes in advance of all domestic flights. Baggage check-in is located in the center of the terminal complex at KOA. At security checkpoints, all travelers must present and valid photo ID and remove all outer garments and shoes.
What to Do at Kona International
Although KOA is considered a small-hub facility, there is a variety of shopping and dining options while you wait to board your flight. Gift shops, newsstands, and restaurants are located in both terminals. Kona International also has an airline lounge. Free Wi-Fi is not currently available at KOA.
What to Expect in Kahului
Kahului and Kona share very similar average temperatures, with highs in the 80s year-round. Both cities are in the Hawaiian-Aleutian Standard Time Zone. The average cost of a meal for two in Kahului is around $60, and taxi rides start just a little over $5.
