It only takes about an hour and a half, flying non-stop, to bridge the roughly 600 miles between San Francisco and Las Vegas, but in terms of atmosphere you might as well be flying across the globe.

It’s a simple matter to trade sequoias for sequins and granola for gambling. United offers a whopping 80 direct flights between the cities each week, and Southwest and Virgin America also have just under 40 weekly services each.

Making your way to San Francisco International Airport

San Francisco’s main airport, SFO is large and busy. It’s made up of 4 terminals, designated 1, 2, 3, and International. Getting to the airport is relatively straightforward, but depending on traffic, driving time can range from 20 minutes to an hour. You can also grab a taxi, which will usually cost between $40 and $50 from downtown. Alternately, you can take public transportation. There are several public bus lines which stop at SFO, and the BART train has its own stop at the airport. The BART fare will be under $6.

The BART station and all 4 terminals (as well as the rental car facility and the two international terminal parking garages) are all connected by the AirTrain people mover, which runs 24 hours a day and is free of charge. You’ll find free WiFi everywhere in the airport, along with business conferencing facilities and charging points for laptops. SFO has even recruited a team of friendly trained dogs, known as “the wag brigade” to brighten up the airport for bored or lonely travelers.

Arriving in Las Vegas

What to say about Las Vegas? Somehow, in a strip where the world’s greatest monuments are shrunk down to size, this place has a way of being larger than life, or at least convincing you to live large. Whether you’re romancing Lady Luck in one of the iconic casinos, watching a living legend perform their high-budget swan song, or simply indulging yourself in bottomless buffets and strong cocktails, Las Vegas is a spot for unbridled decadence.

Just outside the city, nature has a way of making visitors feel very small, very quickly. From the rugged majesty of the Red Rocks to the breath-catching scale of the Grand Canyon or simply the humbling enormity off a star-strewn desert sky, the natural glory of the Las Vegas borderlands is not to be missed.
