If you want to fly this route, you may need to do so via an airport that isn’t even in DC: the Baltimore/Washington Airport. It’s just as likely that you’ll depart from Reagan National Airport or the Dulles International Airport, though.

These three airports have enough amenities like restaurants and shops to keep you busy for a little while, but have intermittent Wi-Fi access and are often a bit run-down.

How Are Different Are Oakland and DC?

DC’s manicured tourism area and gritty neighborhoods are very similar to Oakland’s. The downtown area of Oakland is well kept and is where most of the city’s cultural life goes on, but the outer areas of Oakland tend to be less slightly and may even be dangerous.

With that being said, Oakland has many wonderful tourist destinations of all sorts. If you’re interested in animals and nature, check out the Oakland Zoo, the Oakland Japanese botanical gardens, the Joaquin Miller Park, and the Gertrude Stein Monument.

If you’d rather see Oakland’s vibrant theatre scene, head down to the Fox Oakland Theatre and see the AXIS Dance company or the Oakland Symphony orchestra. Oakland’s food scene is also very diverse, with no fewer than a dozen different nationality’s cuisines represented in style. Be sure to check out the Oakland nightlife, which is renowned for being very lively.

On the whole, Oakland will be about the same price as DC, but somewhat less walkable because of how much it sprawls in comparison to DC’s dense streets.
