Which car rental companies accept debit cards for payment?

1. Dollar | Debit Card Payments

You can use debit cards with a VISA, MasterCard or Discover logo at the outset of any rental as long as you book 24+ hours in advance.

Debit cards may still be used with less than 24 hours advance booking or when renting a luxury, premium, or convertible car with:

  • A valid driver’s license plus one other form of identification, AND
  • Proof of a return airline or cruise travel ticket that matches the rental period and location.

2. Enterprise | Debit Card Payments

Many locations in the US and Puerto Rico accept debit cards. In Canada, only non-airport locations accept debit cards. In all locations, conditions apply when using a debit card for car rentals (see below).

You should always contact the local office directly to confirm their exact requirements for renting a car without a credit card.

Non-airport Enterprise locations (U.S.) debit card policies:

  • Two current utility bills (water bill, gas bill, or internet/cable bill).
  • Recent paycheck stub.
  • The entire cost of the rental at the time of pickup + a minimum deposit.
  • Proof of insurance (also available through Enterprise).
  • Personal references (the full name and phone number of two people for verification of your identity).
  • If you’re due a refund after the rental is complete you should have receipt of it within 15 business days.

Hertz Airport Location Debit Card Rental Policies (U.S.):

Enterprise airport locations only accept debit cards in the U.S. with proof that the customer has both incoming and outgoing flights from the rental location airport.

3. Budget | Debit Card Payments

Budget’s debit card policy varies by location.

When using a debit card, some Budget locations may check your credit with a national credit verification bureau.

Other locations may require you to present a third form of identification.

Upon paying your rental with a debit card at accepted locations, Budget generally requests an authorization hold against your account for the estimated charges of the rental plus any additional value they deem appropriate based on your perceived creditworthiness.

When renting with a debit card at a Budget airport location, one of the following is acceptable in addition to a driver’s license and debit card:

  • a round-trip airline ticket to/from the airport of rental with name and return date listed.
  • a valid U.S. passport or current U.S. military identification card.
  • a current vehicle insurance card.
  • a current copy of either a cell phone bill, home telephone bill, bank statement, or utility bill.

At a Budget off-airport location, one of the following is acceptable in addition to a driver’s license and debit card:

  • a valid U.S. passport or current U.S. military identification card.
  • a current vehicle insurance card.
  • a current copy (within the last 60 days) of the customer’s cellular phone bill, home telephone bill, bank statement or utility bill.

4. Hertz | Debit Card Payments

Hertz does not accept debit cards as a form of payment/guarantee when reserving a car or at the time of pickup. At the beginning of a rental, a valid credit card is required.

Debit cards can be used for payment after the rental is complete, upon return of the vehicle.

5. Avis | Debit Card Payments

Most U.S. locations accept bank debit cards with the Visa or MasterCard logo at the time of rental.

U.S. locations will typically perform a credit check for debit card renters to determine creditworthiness at the time of rental and place a hold on the renter’s card for the amount of the rental plus any additional amount they deem necessary.

6. Alamo | Debit Card Payments

Alamo-accepted debit cards must have the VISA, MasterCard, or Discover Card logo.

In order to book with a debit card at the time of the rental, Alamo customers must be able to provide proof that they have deplaned/disembarked at the location of the rental office and have a ticketed return.

Alamo always accepts debit cards as a form of payment at the time of return.

7. National | Debit Card Payments

Debit cards that are accepted by National must have the VISA, MasterCard, or Discover Card logo.

In the United States, Discover allows you to rent a car using only a debit card, but they require proof that the renter has deplaned or disembarked at the rental location.

You can always use VISA, MasterCard, or Discover debit cards to pay for the rental upon return of your vehicle to a National in the U.S.
