The minimum age for most car rental agencies across the United States and Canada is 21 years old. Michigan and New York have younger age minimums for rentals at 18 years old.
Fees and Surcharges
Young driver fees go by different names depending on the car rental place. You may see it called an Under-25 Fee or an Underage Fee, as well as a Young Renter Fee. They all mean the same thing, though.
They are daily fees that compensate an agency for the extra risk they take when renting to young drivers. In some cases, this fee may be higher than the daily car rental rate itself. Keep in mind, this fee is taxable, too.
Car rentals under 25 can get pricey and young driver fees vary among agencies. Expect to pay between $15 to $35 in daily fees.
States with lower driver age minimums have additional young driver fees. Agencies located in these states have surcharges based on age ranges.
For Michigan, surcharges for drivers between the ages of 18 and 20 is around $40. However, in the same state, the surcharge is about half for 21 to 24-year-old drivers.
In New York, 18 to 20-year old drivers can expect to pay between $52 to $73 in surcharges. Drivers that are between 21 to 24, however, may only pay $20 to $42.
What car type can you rent if you’re a young driver? Most car agencies restrict the type of vehicles that young drivers can rent.
In general, most will rent economy to full-size cars to young drivers. Premium cars, SUVs, passenger vans, minivans, and specialty cars may be restricted.
If you have your heart set on a certain type of car, check with the individual agency. Policies vary depending on agency owner and location.
Are there ways to avoid these expensive fees? Yes, but they’re very specific.
1. AAA Membership
If you have a membership with AAA, you may be eligible for a fee waiver. This only applies to drivers who are between the ages of 20 to 24. And it’s only valid at Hertz.
2. USAA Membership
Are you a service member or a family member of one? If so, you could qualify for a fee waiver. USAA members are eligible for young driver fee waivers.
The fee waivers vary depending on the rental agency, but they range from $20 to $30 per day. Budget, Hertz, and Avis require a driver minimum age of 18 years old. However, you have to be a little older at 21 years old to qualify for the Enterprise fee waiver.
3. Active-Duty Military and Federal Employees
If you are 18 to 24 years old and traveling on official business for the military or government, you may get the young driver fee waived. Be prepared to show proof of official orders, though.
You may also be eligible for special military/government rates from most rental agencies if you are a military or Federal employee.
4. Insurance Replacement Rentals
Want the expensive young driver fee waived? Ask the agency if they have an insurance replacement rental. These replacements have pre-negotiated rates with the rental companies.
