Rent a car and make your family road trip a breeze!
A family road trip is a quintessential American must-do. However, many parents find the idea of road tripping with kids overwhelming. The planning combined with kids stuck in a vehicle for hours is enough to make many families put the road trip on the back burner. But, what if we told you it is much easier than you think?
How To Plan Your Family Road Trip?
Road trips are the perfect opportunity to bond with your family, have some fun, and see new parts of the country. Fill the tank and pack your bags!
To begin planning your road trip, you need to consider your family’s ages and stages. For example, road tripping with an infant will look much different than road tripping with teenagers. You’ll have to adjust your plan accordingly.
Next, you will want to consider whether or not you want to rent a car. Not only will renting a vehicle switch things up and create some excitement, but rental vehicles often have newer amenities (hint – mounted DVD players) and are more fuel-efficient.
Finally, you want to be sure to remember the road trip essentials – safety, snacks, and sanity. It is always wise to have a first aid kit and a car kit. You also want to maintain your cool, so toss the regular family screen time rules out and load up the mobile devices and pack plenty of snacks before hitting the road.
Road Trip With Multiple Cars and Multiple Families
If you plan to take a road trip with multiple family members, such as cousins and grandparents, then it is wise to consider renting a large vehicle rather than driving several separate vehicles. For example, renting a large van or SUV like a Suburban will make it easy to keep everyone together instead of having to follow one another.
Should you choose to follow each other’s vehicles on a road trip, it is important to decide who will lead the pack and what pace he or she will set. You don’t want to put the slowest driver or the fastest driver in the front of the line! A road trip is also a great time to make use of the adaptive cruise control feature in your vehicle, which allows you to follow the vehicle in front of you at a selected gap.
3 States in 3 Days in Just Over 3 Hours
We’ve mapped out a road trip that is easy for families with children of all ages – even little ones! Coming in at just over 200 miles, your family can visit three different states (Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina). If you were to drive the trip straight from Point A (Atlanta) to Point C (Asheville), it would only take you 3 and a half hours! But, because this is a quick and easy family road trip, I’ve broken it down into three stops with just a little over an hour between each stop.
1. Atlanta, Georgia
|Atlanta, GA||Flights to Atlanta |
starting at $39
|Car rental from |
$34* a day

“What’ll ya have?” is the first thing your family will hear upon entering Atlanta’s famous fast-food drive-in, The Varsity, overlooking the busy interstate. While it won’t be the healthiest meal you will eat on this road trip, it is the one that will leave the biggest impression. Your kids will love the environment and paper hats.
Omni Atlanta Hotel at CNN Center
Located in the heart of downtown Atlanta at the CNN Center, families will be in the middle of all the action and super close to their ultimate destination, the Georgia Aquarium. Plus, the Omni Atlanta Hotel offers the Kids Crew program, which presents young guests with a backpack filled with goodies just for their trip.
Families travel from near and far to spend the day at the humungous Georgia Aquarium. Georgia Aquarium is the largest aquarium in the Western Hemisphere and home to an awesome live dolphin show. Tickets range from $26.95 to $35.95 per person.
2. Greenville, South Carolina
|Greenville, SC||Flights to Greenville |
starting at $66
|Car rental from |
$44* a day

Grill Marks is home to the famous FreakShakes, milkshakes with giant toppings like full-sized brownies. This restaurant is within walking distance of all the major tourist sites in Greenville. Have a burger, enjoy some fries, and split one of their giant milkshakes with the family.
Embassy Suites by Hilton Downtown Greenville
Embassy Suites by Hilton in Downtown Greenville is an excellent hotel option for families because it is close to all the action and it has an indoor pool. If you are road tripping through the Southern US, you know a pool is a must!
The Children’s Museum of the Upstate
The Children’s Museum of the Upstate is located in Downtown Greenville within walking distance of both Grill Marks and Embassy Suites. This is a fabulous three-story children’s museum with several hands-on exhibits. Plus, it is only $9!
3. Asheville, North Carolina
|Asheville, NC||Flights to Asheville |
starting at $66
|Car rental from |
$53* a day
|Hotels in Asheville|
Offering delicious homemade southern dishes, Tupelo Honey is a wonderful restaurant option for families. After the fast food at The Varsity and the giant milkshakes, parents will be happy to discover Tupelo Honey offers healthy food options, such as sweet potato pancakes, on the kid’s menu.
Omni Grove Park Inn
The Omni Grove Park Inn is a historic hotel in Asheville. Families can enjoy the luxury of this high-end hotel year-round, but those families who visit near Christmas will get to enjoy the famous national gingerbread house competition held here annually.
The Biltmore Estate
A visit to the historic Biltmore Estate is an absolute must-do when visiting Asheville. Don’t let the idea of visiting a huge home with kids seem daunting – they cater to kids! Your little ones will love the audio tour given by the Biltmore family dog and exploring the beautiful grounds.
Road Tripping with Your Family is Easy!
This short, 3-state road trip is the perfect introduction to road tripping with your family. Your trip is broken up into manageable (and fun) sections. Once you get this one under your belt, you’ll be a pro!
