The Oscars 2017: Best Picture filming locations you can visit

Movies provide a window into new places and the latest crop of Oscar-nominated films offer a diverse selection of locations to experience the magic of cinema. Consider the candidates for the Best Picture Academy Award and find out about the destinations behind the stories in the potential winning films.

There is a frission of excitement for film fans when the announcement of the nominees for the Oscars is made and the starting gun is fired for the race to win an Academy Award. The highest accolade in Hollywood, this year’s ceremony to honor the best films of 2016 which takes place on February 26th.

All eyes on the night will be on the Best Picture category with a selection of outstanding films that transcend borders, taking audiences to locations across the globe.

Ahead of the 89th Academy Awards we take a look at the best picture filming locations you can visit

Arrival

What’s it about? When alien spacecraft appear on Earth, American officials approach linguistics professor Louise Banks (Amy Adams) to work with theoretical physicist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) and attempt to communicate with the visitors. Arrival has been nominated in eight categories for this year’s Academy Awards.

Where was it filmed? French Canadian director and writer Denis Villeneuve chose to return home to work on this sci-fi production with principal photography on the film taking place in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Fences

What’s it about? Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning play of the same name by August Wilson, the film stars Densel Washington as Troy Maxson, a former star baseball player whose caustic attitudes toward life and race relations create barriers between himself and his sons.

Where was it filmed? Director and star Denzel Washington filmed the movie in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, using archive images at the Carnegie Museum of Art to inspire an authentic 1950s look for scenes shot in the Hill, the West End, the Strip District and other neighborhoods.

Hacksaw Ridge

What’s it about? the biographical war drama is based around the experience of Desmond Doss, played by Andrew Garfield, an American pacificist combat medic who saves dozens of lives during the Battle of Okinawa.

Where was it filmed? Shooting took place in Australia where production designer Barry Robison was tasked by director Mel Gibson with re-creating World War II era Virginia and Japan. A soundstage in Sydney was converted to resemble the network of tunnels at Hacksaw Ridge while the small town of Richmond in Australia’s Hunter Valley stood in for Doss’s home in Virginia.

Hell or High Water

What’s it about? This heist-crime film sees two brothers rob branches of a Texas bank to obtain enough money to prevent the foreclosure of their family ranch. The robbers, played by Chris Pine and Ben Foster are pursued by lawmen played by Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham.

Where was it filmed? Locations in New Mexico stood in for Texas in the production with rural scenes filmed in Guadalupe county and scenic shots filmed in Alamogordo Valley. Principal photography began in Clovis, New Mexico.

Hidden Figures

What’s it about? In the early 1960s, as the US aims to surpass the Soviet Union in the space race, three mathematically gifted African-American women perform vital tasks in the challenging environment of NASA’s segregated Virginia facilities.

Where was it filmed? The movie is set in Hampton, Virginia, but filming took place in Atlanta, at locations including downtown Canton, East Point and the Morehouse College campus.

La La Land

What’s it about? Aspiring actress Mia (Emma Stone) and jazz pianist Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) struggle to realize their dreams and sustain their love, despite the often soul-crushing commercial nature of show business.

Where was it filmed? This romantic tale is also a love letter to the city of Los Angeles with over sixty locations across the city providing a backdrop on neon signs, dreamy sunsets, soaring palm streets and distinctive architecture. Tapdance your way along Mount Hollywood Drive, visit Griffith Observatory or have dinner at Grand Central Market to recreate scenes from this hotly tipped contender for Best Picture.

Lion

What’s it about? Five-year-old Saroo is separated from his family in India, then adopted by an Australian couple. As an adult, Saroo sets out to find his birth family using modern technology as memories of his past resurface.

Where was it filmed? Lion is an inspirational story set against striking landscapes in Tasmania, Australia and West Bengal India. Scenes where the family play cricket on the beach were filmed at Marion Bay, Tasmania, with other scenes set on Bruny Island, Recherche Bay and Mount Wellington.

Manchester by the Sea

What’s it about? When his older brother dies, handyman Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) returns to his hometown, a close-knit fishing community in Massachusetts. There, he struggles to cope with his grief and comforts the teenage nephew who has been left in his care.

Where’s it filmed? Almost all of the movie was filmed in Manchester-by-the-Sea in Massachusetts, with additional scenes in other parts of the state, including the towns of Essex, Rockport, Quincy, Salem, alongside Bakers Island Light Station. Without a doubt, this best picture filming location will become popular with toursts.

Moonlight

What’s it about? Based on a play by Tarell Alvin McCraney, this drama charts three stages in the life of a black gay youth named Chiron as he grows up in a rough neighborhood in Miami.

Where’s it filmed? Moonlight has been hailed for keeping the look of the film authentically Miami. This included shooting scenes around the Liberty Square housing project, the first segregated public housing project in the United States. Other key moments in the movie play out at Jimmy’s Eastside Diner and Virginia Key Beach.
