The new shape of adventure and wellness travel
Adventure has always been about discovery. But the new frontier isn’t a mountain range, it’s a mindset.
A quiet revolution is reshaping how we explore. Adventure holidays are no longer defined by altitude or adrenaline, but by meaning. Today’s adventure travelers crave depth – experiences that connect them more deeply to the landscapes, cultures, and people they encounter. Adventure and wellness travel is less about conquering peaks and more about feeling present in a place, whether that’s a mountain trail, a desert horizon, or a hidden coastal village.
So how big is this adventure travel trend? Nearly a third of all travelers now identify as adventurers, with more than a third saying being active makes them happiest on holiday. Road trips rule the wish list for almost three-quarters of us, while half crave action-filled itineraries. Wellness retreats too, are booming, and relevant here (especially when the spa sits at the end of a trail)*.
Leading the charge globally are Women and Gen Z and with 74% of Gen Z opting for action and adventure breaks*. Interested in reaching new heights with an adventure travel holiday? This guide has you covered.

Activity Highlights
Not all adventures look the same. For some, it’s a glacier hike in Patagonia; for others, it’s a sunrise yoga class in the jungles of Bali. Whether you chase altitude, water, speed or serenity, the world is full of landscapes designed for your style of escape.
Hiking & trekking
Patagonia and Nepal
Mountain adventures dominate for a reason: two-thirds of conversations on social media about adventure focus on exploring natural environments and the desire to conquer new heights. From the granite spires of Torres del Paine to the teahouse treks of the Annapurna Circuit. Travelers are heading to higher ground – not just for the ski slopes, but for serenity too, as highlighted in the report linked below.
Water & dive
Maldives reefs, Azores caves, Caspian coast
A quarter of adventurers are inspired by water-based experiences in tropical and coastal settings. The Maldives’ coral gardens teem with manta rays and turtles, while the Azores hide volcanic sea caves waiting to be explored by kayak or snorkel. Along Azerbaijan’s Caspian coast, water sports blend with a rising beach culture that’s redefining the region.
Immersive wilderness
African safaris, Himalayan treks, soul searching
Spending time outdoors has been shown again and again to lower stress levels, improve mood, and help the mind reset – even a short walk in nature can make a measurable difference. Moreover, immersive wilderness experiences and awe-inspiring wildlife encounters encourage a greater sense of connection to nature. With national parks trending, India’s Himalayas luring hardcore trekkers and African safaris topping search lists, the wild is calling many of us.
Wellness escapes
Bhutan retreats, Bali yoga villages, Iceland hot springs
Sometimes the adventure is inward. Bhutan’s cliffside monasteries and mindful retreats offer spiritual altitude. In Bali, jungle villages hum with yoga, sound healing and community rituals. In Iceland, volcanic hot springs let you float in mineral-rich waters under skies streaked with aurora or the midnight sun.
Volcano tourism
Mount Etna and Stromboli in Italy, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, New Zealand’s Tongariro Alpine
One of the most unforgettable ways to experience a volcano is through immersive volcano tourism – from guided geological walks that reveal the story behind each eruption to summit climbs that reward with sweeping, otherworldly views. Travelers can witness molten drama firsthand at Hawaii’s Kīlauea, where lava flows carve glowing ribbons through the dark, or take in the spectacle from a safe distance at Italy’s Stromboli, where night eruptions light up the Mediterranean sky.
