Tipping in London

Dreaming of a London vacation filled with hopping in classic taxis, dining on delicious cuisines and crashing at hip pads? All of these sound great but what do you tip your English hosts when you are visiting? We have the full guide on who and how much to tip plus some great places to check out in London.


When your traveling the UK, a couple of tipping procedures come into play. In some cases service fees are included on the bill. However, in situations where you are receiving amazing service, it’s important to tip accordingly. Here’s a quick guide on tipping etiquette when in London.

Currency: Pound Sterling

Taxi  10% of the final fare £1 to £2 if you are helped with your
Hotel  Housekeeper: Typically not tipped. 
Bellhop: £1 to £2 per bag
Concierge: £10 to £15 to help with reservation and tours
Restaurants  12 to 15% of the final bill, always tip in cash
Tours 10 to 15% of the final cost of the tour


Taxi drivers normally expect around 10% of the total fare as a tip. If the driver is helpful with your bags tipping £1 to £2 a bag is common.


The Bellman can be tipped £1 to £2 for helping with your bags.

Housekeeping is not generally tipped as service fees are included in your final bill. However if you do so, it would be appreciated.

If the Concierge is helpful, booking reservations and such. You can tip them £10 to £15 for their services.

Tipping in restaurants can differ depending on the establishment. In some cases a service fee is included on the bill and you are free to tip more if you wish. If service is not included you can tip 12 to 15% of the final bill. The service fee is not always clear so feel free to ask if the service was included. Make sure to always tip in cash.

For Tour Guides you can tip 10 to 15% of the final cost of the tour. If you are in a group tipping £2 to £5 per single person or £1 to £2 a person for a larger group.
