Turkish Airlines is offering safe flight experience

For Turkish Airlines, safe and comfortable journeys of their passengers have always been the utmost priority. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve, Turkey’s national flag carrier has taken several new coronavirus-secure measures to protect travellers at the airports and throughout the flights.

Please note that it is mandatory to wear a mask and maintain social distancing at all points at the airport.

Turkish Airlines recommends that passengers complete their check-in online via either the mobile app or website to reduce the contact rate. It’s better to arrive at the airport no less than 3 hours before your flight. The check-in procedures will end at least 60 minutes before the scheduled departure time for domestic flights and 75 minutes before international flights.

New Turkish Airlines cabin baggage requirements

Passengers can only take personal and valuable belongings of the permitted size and weight with them.

Only one personal belonging (a laptop bag, a purse, a camera, an umbrella, etc.) is permitted in the cabin. The hand luggage items should have a maximum length of 40 cm, a width of 30 cm and a depth of 15 cm. All cabin items should weight no more than 4 kg. A passenger can add unused cabin luggage allowance to their baggage allowance.

COVID-19 safety measures during boarding and disembarking the Turkish Airlines aircraft

When boarding and disembarking, passengers must maintain a social distance of 1.5 meters and wear face coverings.

As part of personal health measures, Turkish Airlines recommends wearing a mask from the very moment you step out of your door. Single-use medical masks should be changed every four hours. So you must bring enough extra masks and hygienic hand wipes with you for the whole duration of your journey. Used masks should be put into a personal waste bag without touching their front surface. Read on to find essential face mask information and tips for flying during coronavirus.

Against the backdrop of a global pandemic, it’s crucial for your health to regularly wash your hands and rub them with an alcohol-based formulation. Hand sanitizers are available at all airport entry points and terminals.

Before boarding, Turkish Airlines employees conduct body temperature checks for all passengers. Airport and airline staff are required to wear masks, gloves, and other necessary equipment. Protective shields are installed at the counters. There are also contactless self-check-in kiosks and automated baggage check-in terminals.

To maintain a safe distance between passengers at passport control, a special social distancing line marking has been introduced with an interval of 1.5 meters. Passengers are called to the checkpoint in small groups, and all boarding checks are contactless.

Most passengers board Turkish Airlines’ aircraft using telescopic ramps. In exceptional cases, the buses are in operation. Either way, the boarding is carried out with maintaining a safe distancing between passengers. Travellers board in an orderly fashion, starting from the last row.

Passengers disembark the aircraft in lines of 10 people with 2-minute intervals, following the announcement and directions of the cabin crew.

Measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 on-board

The wearing of protective masks is mandatory throughout the flight, both for the crew members and passengers.

After each flight, Turkish Airlines’s staff thoroughly disinfect all surfaces that passengers come into contact with: armrests, folding tables, seat belts, screens, luggage racks, reading lamps, windows, toilets, magazine racks, and everything else. Upon arrival at the airlines’ hub, they disinfect an aircraft once again, following the special two-stage disinfection procedure called fogging, and make it ready for the next flight.

All Turkish Airlines aircraft use HEPA filters that remove 99.97% of all harmful particles in the air. With the help of a HEPA filtration system, the air in the cabin is completely renewed every three minutes.

Airplane cleaning Turkish Airlines

Each Turkish Airlines flight is appointed with a ‘Hygiene Expert’ cabin crew. They are responsible for lavatory disinfection and enforcement of all on-board hygiene measures.

All passengers are provided with the Hygiene Kit consisting of a mask, an antiseptic tissue and a hand sanitizer. The kits for short-haul flights include a mask and an antiseptic tissue, whereas the kits for long-haul flights also offer a hand sanitizer.

Blankets and sleeping kits are cleaned after each flight in professional facilities using high temperatures and non-allergic chemicals. Blankets are only provided upon request on flights longer than 4 hours, and the airline has temporarily removed the pillows and printed in-flight magazines for hygiene and safety reasons.

Turkish Airlines catering services during the COVID-19

In line with other coronavirus-related measures, Turkish Airlines has made temporary changes to their catering services. To minimise contact between the crew and the passengers, they’re now offering sanitary packed meals for contactless in-flight dining.

  • New covid-secure Turkish Airlines catering sets consist of single-use products.
  • Only bottled water is served during domestic and international flights with duration up to 2 hours. On flights over 2 hours, they serve water in a catering box/package.
  • Special meal options are not available at this time. These include meals requested due to health requirements, religious beliefs, or nutritional preferences.
  • Turkish Airlines has introduced certain restrictions on the variety of beverages on their flights. All drinks are offered in single-serve packages.
