What to avoid on a road trip

If you've ever been on a road trip you've learned the hard way what not to do. Here are some tips to help you along.

Road trips are a great alternative to flying, and can make for an exciting vacation if done correctly. However, there are a few rookie mistakes you will need to avoid if you don’t want your trip to be a complete disaster. Here are some things you never want to do when taking a road trip:

1. Over pack

Sometimes when packing for a long haul trip it can feel like you need to bring every last one of your possessions. What if you come across a situation where you need your ball gown or your lucky basketball? While it may seem a good idea at the time, the car will be cramped enough already without the extra luggage.

2. Under pack

Though over packing is a mistake, under packing can be equally tragic. The last thing you want is to get on the road and realize you have forgotten road trip games, an extra change of clothes, or your toothbrush. It’s important to find that happy medium between too much luggage, and not nearly enough.

3. Forget snacks

Road trips can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days, but no matter how long they take someone is bound to get hungry. Having to continually stop to pick up food can get annoying very quickly, so its best to just come prepared. Make sure you pack both sweet and salty snacks so you have something for every craving.

4. Forget to fill up

Before hitting the highway when you start your road trip, make sure you fill up your tank. Stopping is inevitable once you get going, but you’ll want to put some miles behind you before your first pit stop.

5. Forget the camera

Road trips are not just a time for driving, but a time for bonding as well. There will be plenty of moments you will want to remember forever, so make sure you capture them. Once you have returned home from vacation you can put all of those pictures in a scrapbook to show off to your friends and family.

6. Drive straight through

The road can be extremely boring if you just plow straight through. Instead of flying down endless miles of highway, try pulling off the road every once in a while and exploring. If you know what areas you will be driving through beforehand you can research local attractions and visit them to make it a road trip to remember.

7. Bring too many electronics

Road trips are an excellent way to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and unplug for a little while. It won’t feel like an escape if you are still checking your email, text messages, and social media every five minutes. Trying putting the phones and tablets in the glove box for a little while and instead play some road trip games.

8. Wear the wrong clothes

It’s a road trip, not a runway. While you don’t have to look like a slob (unless you really want to), make sure you wear clothes that you know you will be comfortable in for more than a few hours. Remember, you will be in a confined space so don’t wear anything that will be itchy or hard to move around in.

9. Go it alone

No matter where you are going, you shouldn’t have to spend the entire car ride by yourself. Having a road trip buddy will allow you to take turns driving and it will give you someone to talk to when you get bored. It’s also much safer, since you will have someone to wake you up if you start to doze off behind the wheel.

10. Take the wrong car

Cars that are not fuel efficient or spacious may not be the best choice for a long car ride. If you don’t own a car that will be suitable for your trip, you can always rent one through Skyscanner!
