Abu Simbel Vacations

Abu Simbel is a very small town in southern Egypt. Its principle draw is its proximity to the Abu Simbel temple complex, an ancient and iconic monument to Pharaoh Ramesses II. Massive statues of the Pharaoh and his queen, Nefertiti, loom over the temple entrances, and the carvings within are true wonders to behold. The complex was relocated in its ... Read more
entirety in the late 1960s due to the construction of the Aswan damn, which threatened its original location. The feat of essentially moving a mountain was accomplished to perfection, and it is hard to tell that the temples were not constructed where they stand. UNESCO designated the complex, along with a few other monuments to the south, a World Heritage Site. The town of Abu Simbel consists of a few small hotels and restaurants to serve the masses of visitors who flock to the historical site, and does not have any sites or activities to offer its self.

There is very little to Abu Simbel other than the famous temples. The airport is functional and this is a reasonable place to stop for a break as you transit to / from Sudan or wait to embark on a cruise of Lake Nasser.

Be aware that frequent sand storms can cause flight delays. Try to avoid tight connections.

Another great temple with full of Egyptian wisdom. In Feb and Oct every year, the natural sunlight light up the inner sanctum of the temple.

Really amazing; especially the white sand contract with the blue sky and no civilisation in sight. Everybody should see it once!

This is the most amazing attraction I've ever laid my eyes on! Do not miss out on this if you are visiting Egypt. It is worth the extra plane ride. Not only is it a historic marvel, but an engineering marvel as well.

It's only a quick 45 minute flight from Aswan (or 3hrs by car) to reach this ancient wonder. While I was there I was amazed to learn that this isn't the original site of the temple. In the late 60's it was carved up into large stone blocks (you can see the seems if you look closely) and moved to it's current location to prevent it from being submerged under water due to the creation of Lake Nasser. I recommend getting there (or any historical site in Egypt) early because the crowds are smaller and the temperatures are usually cooler. Truly Amazing!

Simply magnificent! Abu Simbel might not be the easiest accessible tour spot of Egypt, but it is well worth the visit when finally here.
