As Mexico's original swanky resort town dating back to the 1930s, Acapulco recently received a much-needed $1 billion facelift. Now a blend of both campy cruise stop offerings and high-end restaurants and hotels worthy of Elizabeth Taylor or the Kennedys (former vacationers here), Acapulco is working overtime to regain its former reputation as an ... arbiter of class, but one that's affordable to all levels. Hard hit by drug crime and poverty, the path is an uphill one, but that doesn't deter from the gorgeous beaches, starlet-friendly hotels and spectacular cliff divers the city is famous for.

the year’s highest humidity and temperatures, does have some perks: the predictability of the rain (it usually only comes in the afternoons so you can get your beachtime and sightseeing done in the morning), cheaper hotel prices, fewer crowds, and a chance to see nature come to life with the nourishing water. You can also try to plan a trip during the months before and after high season -- November and May -- to try and snag good deals without as much wet weather.

Acapulco was my first favorite beach vacation in Mexico. Fell in love with it until I discovered Cancun and the Riviera Maya side.

Don't skip your siesta in Acapulco, because you'll need the sleep: you'll be busy dancing from midnight until the sun comes up. Countless nightclubs keep the evenings hopping, while Acapulco Bay and its beaches give the beautiful people a place to perfect their tans by day. Gourmet restaurants and exceptional water sports make your stay unforgettable.

Acapulco is still famous for its nightlife and attracts many tourists, although most are now from Mexico itself. The resort area is divided into two: The north end of the bay is the "traditional" area, where the famous in the mid-20th century vacationed; and the south end is dominated by newer luxury high-rise hotels

I visited Acapulco for work reasons during spring break (I know, I know) and absolutely hated it. It was full of drunk students and I felt that somewhere, deep down, there might be a town I'd like to see but at the time I was there... not so much. If you like to party and drink it's great, but for those of us who like places a little less crowded and a bit less booze-fueled, this is probably not the place to visit.

I really enjoyed Acapulco, however it was during a time when the crime and drug situation was not as prevalent.
