Check out the basement jazz bar. I painted the walls and helped install the lighted art wall and lighted tables. Try the twist on egg rolls. Let me know what you think.

ZInc is a great place to go for food, wine, drinks, or live music. Located close to the Universty of New Mexico on Central just east of Girard, it is a large modern restaurant upstairs and a wine bar/bar downstairs.

The restaurant decor is fashionably hip, with a Zinc metal theme mixed with southwest colors and whimsically pretty 5 to 9 pointed star light fixtures hanging from the main dining room's 25 foot ceiling. The bar is to the left, with a massive dark colored wood shelving backdrop rising about 15 feet, with about 200 wine bottles in separate cubby holes. The bar is covered with an industrial modern aluminum finish. You can order everything from the bar if you like. There are 15 tables in the main part of the room past the bar, and beyond that is the open grill kitchen with a staff of 4 - 5 chefs. On the right side of the room is a second story mezzanine with about a dozen more tables with white table cloths upstairs.

I ate at the bar and the bartender, Abraham, was very professional and attentive for food and drinks. The menu is a Bistro style offering which is very good. Gnocchi, Flank Steak au Poivre, Duck Breast, Grilled Lamb, Bouillabaise, Steelhead Trout, Steak Frites, Tenderloin, all in the $20 range, plus or minus $5.

I selected a wonderful salad of Blood Oranges over bright green and fluffy Spinach Leaves. Chunks of Beets were mixed in, so there was a nice visual palette of Blood Red Orange slices, Beet Root Pieces, Leafy Green Spinach covered with a blackened Onion Balsamic Vinegarette, and accented with julienned red Radicchio, and sprinkled with whole toasted Pistachio nuts (shelled and salted) with wedges of a nice, very dry, naked Goat Cheese (8.25). Excellent!

My entree was a wonderful Truffled Chicken Paillard Florentine (17). This is a tender breast layered with Black Truffles, Pancetta and Fontina Cheese, served atop an Orzo Pasta (white and black) tossed with Ricoota Cheese and Spinach in a Madeira Wine pan sauce. Excellent again! Best breast I have had in a while (Chicken that is, Mammalia is another story!)

I complimented the chicken with an A by Acacia California Pinot Noir. What is great at Zinc's is that they have a featured wine list of about 25 bottles, including California, Oregon, Washington, French, Italian and even New Mexico wines, and all of them can be had in 1/2 glasses (3.5-8.5) full glasses (7 - 12.5) half bottles (13-34) and full bottles (26-58). They also have a very extensive wine list that includes Australian, Argentinian, and Spanish selections to add to the aformentioned. Their Sparkling Wine list is stellar, as indicated by a dozen medium priced selections, all the way up to Dom Perignon, Louis Roederer Cristal, Tattinger and Veuve Cliquet, going up to $304 a bottlefor the finest ( a Taittinger). They also have Jerboam sized Champagne and some Wines for special occasions. They additionally offer special Wine "Flight" tasters, featuring separate lists for Bubbly, Reds, Whites, etc.

The Bar downstairs is large but cozy and intimate, with live music and a crowd generally averaging just out of college in age with a mixture of professors types and town people. It has a litle bit of a Beatnik North Beach feel due to the lighting and decor.

Zinc has something for everybody, and the service is good and the food is great. You would easily pay double the prices at any similar place in SF, LA, or NY. The only drawback is that it might get a little noisy in there with a full crowd, especially if there are a lot of drunk 20s somethings binging, and the high ceilings will raise the volume.

I would recommend you try this place, and if you want something a little cheaper and a bit quieter, there is another French Bistro 2 doors down with 25% cheaper dishes with a more country-Provence like menu. You can stop at Buffalo Exchange in between the two eateries and pick up a second-hand bargain! Such a Deal!
