Easy hike to see Rundebranden, where in springtime you can see the puffins coming in from the see in the evening. For a longer hike you can continue to the lighthouse and get amazing views over the horizon.

While staying in Geiranger, we weren’t able go hiking in the mountains near the fjord, as it was raining before we got there, during the night and again in the morning. We decided to drive to a little island called Runde where there are huge colonies of birds (more than half a million birds), such as puffins, cormorants and many other species. It was a pretty long drive from Geiranger, with two ferry rides, but the drive was beautiful and very interesting. At the information booth on the island a lady told us that we may not see many puffins as they are at sea feeding and won’t be back until 8 pm, but if we are lucky – we may see a couple of lazy puffins who came back early. She also told us that there is a 50 minute walk to get to that area where they are. Being optimistic and excited, we started our walk. It was pretty strenuous – started with climbing a mountain on about 45 degrees angle for about ½ mile, then it wasn’t so steep but we had to brave strong winds and wet grass and dirt. When we finally got to the end of the walk we were awed by cliffs of enormous height with spectacular views. At that moment we realized that we won’t be able to get close to the birds, as it was impossible to go down those cliffs. A small attempt to get down a bit was not successful – I slipped on a wet stone and fell on my back. Fortunately, I didn’t brake anything (couple bruises, that’s all), and my husband didn’t have to carry me down the mountain (only my heavy photographic equipment). We saw a bunch of puffin heads in the water far away and many other birds on a cliff a distance away (thousands of them sitting there and flying around) but nothing close up. I did see one puffin for a moment – flying into a nest nearby but it was so brief that even a fast camera didn’t capture it well. Somewhat disappointed, we enjoyed our trip anyway, as there was much more to see than just puffins themselves (plus, I took a puffin picture from a poster on the island!).
