The five-star Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht, located right smack in the middle of the canal ring is an excellent place to stay. Upscale Marcel Wanders design meets 17th-Century charm.

Interior enthusiasts - prepare to treat your eyes! Standing on one of the Dam’s most famous (and central!) canals Prinsengracht - the former library’s wall paper bursts with imagery from historic books and the bar and lobby is embellished with pieces of heritage from Europe’s most liberal city. Think chandeliers inside huge bells, wooden clogs used as book ends, and a huge modern day graffiti in the silent garden. Of course a room with a canal view is ideal in Amsterdam but what really impressed me was having your own private Nespresso machine. Oh, and the intricate wall paper in the toilet boasts designs of the Dutch Golden Age and Delft ceramics, windmills, tulips and dashes of the country’s colour orange (no need to take your phone into the bathroom when you can look at that masterpiece!) The open show kitchen at the downstairs Bluespoon Restaurant makes you feel part of the cooking process - the curing, braising and smoking - all happens before your eyes. My favourite dish was the Fish Soup by Chef Kasper Stiekema. It was full, fresh and everything you’d expect from a port city bubbling with seafood options!

From the outside, the Andaz hotel looks a bit out of place – a sleek, modern and minimal building next to traditional canal houses? Then, you walk in and it’s like you’re in some sort of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ scenario. Giant chandeliers hang from the ceiling above the reception desks, which are round, oversized and made of marble, of course. Tasteful statues adorn the inside lobby and lounge, but the most ‘dreamy’ setting is found in the back: in the hotel’s interior garden. With a large black and white mural, more statues and lots of space for roaming, the garden, like the rest of the hotel, simply screams creativity. It hard to describe the eclectic design of the hotel’s interior, but somehow its' large video installations do not clash with, but rather complement, the surrounding classic Delft-blue patterns and antiques. The rooms themselves are also quirky yet stylish, and the quality of materials and amenities is of the highest standard. Whether your room is looking out onto the beautiful Prinsengracht canal, or onto the back garden – you can’t lose. Added bonus: dogs allowed - they even get their own beds!

The latest project from Dutch wild child Marcel Wanders—who’s been called the Lady Gaga of design—is, of all places, a former public library. But walking through his dreamlike interiors you would never believe it: quirky touches playfully reimagine many of Holland’s icons (tulips; shipping maps; wooden clogs), while the country’s signature delft blue appears on custom rugs, wallpapers, and hand-painted sinks. A feature we loved: the 40-piece, avant-garde video art collection displayed on screens throughout the hotel comes courtesy of a partnership with the newly reopened Stedelijk Museum nearby.
