If you're in Amsterdam for an "edgy" experience, you won't be staying at Hotel de l'Europe. It recently underwent some renovations and the decor is now thoroughly modern, but it's still a 5* classic with the levels of sophistication and service you'd expect for its high prices.

For those who crave a bit of traditional luxury, make your way to Hotel De L’Europe. A top-hat wearing concierge greets you as you enter through revolving doors, and, as you take a seat in the plushy and velvety lounge, a piano player appears as if out of nowhere, calming you with the easy stroke of the keys. Overlooking the Amstel river you can enjoy the culinary expertise of the Bord’eau restaurant (2 Michelin stars), with a unique collection of wines with which to compliment your meal. To continue with the old-style charm of the hotel, make your way to Freddy’s Bar, for an after-meal cigar and cognac session. The rooms take the meaning of ‘accommodation’ to the next level, with built-in TV’s in the bathroom mirrors and motion-sensor lighting to avoid stumbling about in the middle of the night. A great blend of modern and traditional services.

A perfect combination of luxury, elegance, and modern flair - the Hotel de l'Europe may not be a quaint little boutique hotel, but it's not an overpriced chain location, either. The plush red lobby stretches out into a lounge and culminates in a circular bar - make sure to be here after 3pm, when there's live piano music. This is one of the few hotels - if not the only - that has a swimming pool in the fitness center, and regardless of the unpredictable Amsterdam weather, you can enjoy a heated swim or soak with jet streams - a mix between a Jacuzzi and a thermal bath. There isn't a bad room in the building - since the hotel stands alone and open, you'll always see the bustling streets or dreamy canal. There are three color themes - red, blue, and black - and each room follows its theme impressively. Sit in the little desk cubby in front of a window, sink down into the impossibly soft bed, or ponder the traditional art - authentic copies of the originals hanging in the Rijksmuseum. The marble bathrooms are indulgent and comfortable - with heated floors, deep bathtubs, and my favorite: rain showers!

The hotel is owned by the Heineken family, which means all Heineken beer (the locals will scoff, but foreigners have to get their fill) -- and the downstairs bar/cafe, Freddy's Bar, is where Freddy Heineken himself used to sit and relax (in the corner table by the windows.)

They recently added a new wing to the hotel, which is known as the boutique section - set away from the main street in the back of the hotel, it is extremely peaceful and quiet, and tucked away corners with armchairs is the PERFECT place to curl up with a book. Or take advantage of the four computers they offer with free Internet here - also allowing you to be undisturbed.

This hotel can't fit into a mold: it's an excellent mash of old world and new world with a twist of modern luxury and classy, traditional elegance.

Fantastic combination of old historic vibe, classy service and modern tech and amenities. This hotel is in a chunk of old canal houses, and has a certain old-fashioned vibe that comes from the super-deep carpet and staff in black suits. But everything has been updated with modern style--huge blow-ups of details of Old Master paintings, absurdly high-tech bathrooms, etc. The tech detail I loved: little motion-sensor-activated lights under the bed that turn on so you can see your way to the bathroom...then turn off when you're back.

Loved having coffee in the morning and beer at night on the balcony over the canal and people watching. The hotel is with in biking distance to everything or just steps away!!

Very nice!
