On the lovely east side of town - right by the Oosterpark and Tropenmuseum - is the historic Arena Hotel. When you walk into the dark foyer and see that epic wrought iron and stone staircase you certainly feel like you’re in a dear old building. Originally used as an orphanage in 1888, the hotel has kept its old-world charm and is very cosy. Each room is decorated differently - the deluxe room LDD is a sun-drenched loft with two flat-screen TVs and a fluffy big bed. It was a pleasant surprise to see the four-star hotel offer breakfast at a cheerful pay-in-advance-rate of 15.50 euros (cheap compared to other AMS hotels). You can easily stroll outside and take a tram into the city or perhaps even a canal boat. Staff are simply a delight - there was some construction going on around the outside of the building during the end of 2015 but it doesn’t hinder the experience and management hope renovations will be finished by summer 2016.

Although it is not located in the center of the city, the hotel Arena more than makes up for this minor detail with their wonderful accommodations. Besides, one can hardly complain with the lovely Westerpark and the Troppenmuseum as neighbours. The hotel Arena building itself is large and grand, and pretty hard to miss from the outside. On the inside you will find wide staircases and tall ceilings - the preserved architecture of the building as a former nursing home. The rooms are completely modernized and the décor is not extravagant, nor completely minimalist. You can choose to take a ‘double floor’ room, which means that the ground section is for the bathroom (in a cube of dark glass), and a living-room area with couch and working desk, leaving the top section as the ‘bedroom’. The ‘one level’ rooms are also quite spacious - another advantage over inner-city accommodation. The grounds of the hotel are ample, with enough room for a front patio AND a backyard, with couch seating, a trampoline and a swing set for kids. It is recommended to made your booking with breakfast included, otherwise it will be charged separately for a slightly higher cost Also, internet is available with a daily charge.

Now a four-star hotel in plentiful surroundings, Hotel Arena hasn't always enjoyed such a luxurious lifestyle. It began life as a refugee centre for Belgians during the Second World War and was commandeered by occupying forces. Since then, it's been a care home for disabled women, reopening as a wonderfully designed hotel in 1986.

A very popular spot for meetings and events. The yearly internet new years drinks are held here. That's why I come here , and they organize it well.

So far one of the best hotel I've stayed in Amsterdam. Coming for short business trips, the place is right, so is the price. Outdoors seating for drinks when summer comes, this definitely a good spot, albeit a little bit off-centered.
