This temple has an impressive stone walkway, which connects up with the Terrace of the Elephants. Baphuon was taken apart and then put back together again, and many of the pieces were misplaced. In the forest surrounding Baphuon you can see ancient stones lying around in piles, now overgrown with moss and shrubs. On the temple itself, particularly at the top, you can see numbers written on the stones.

The Baphuon temple was built in the 11th century before Angkor Thom came into existence. The temple was originally a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva but turned into a Buddhist temple in the 15th century. In the 1960s, restoration and reconstruction work were in progress but stalled during the Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s. For over 20 years, the Baphuon was left abandoned until rebuilding efforts resumed in 1995. Today, some parts of the temple are accessible of which contain interesting bas-reliefs.

Not usually visited by the throngs of tourists, this wonderful temple is worth the visit. It's a bit of a walk up the steep stairs, but the views along the way is amazing.

Less impressive than other parts of Angkor Thom and, certainly, the Bayon. In the midst of restoration so likely to move up in the ranks over the next few years. Currently, easy to see the scale but mostly in ruin.
