Siem Reap, Cambodia

At the entrance to the waterfall area, Kbal Spean or the 1000 lingas as it is known is a section of river where it’s possible to see ancient lingas that were carved into the river bed. It is to this day a very sacred place for Cambodian people, especially young couples wishing to conceive, it is said that this water is blessed and it will improve fertility.

Located just 12 kilometres from Banteay Srei is the River of Thousand Lingas – 1000 carvings of lingas on the rocky riverbed of Kbal Spean. Recognised as a divine phallus of the Hindu god Shiva, lingas are found everywhere particularly in Angkor temple sanctuaries where worshippers have been pouring water over them for centuries. In Kbal Spean, the water rushes across the carved lingas and then feeds the rice fields below, thus symbolizing fertility. Other carvings of Hindu gods on the riverbed are Vishnu with Lakshmi reclining on a serpent with the lotus flower emerging from Vishnu’s navel which bears Brahma, the creator; and a four-faced Brahma sitting on a lotus.

I really enjoyed this spot. A bit far from Siem Reap but means it is also less touristed and you'll find a bit more tranquility. The forested location necessitates a short hike -- which is brutal in the summer but provides you with a different experience from what you'll find in the the main temple complexes which are completely deforested (except for Beng Mealea).

If you are heading up to Banteay Srey, it's worth going the extra 15km to see Kbal Spean. You do require your temple pass for this!
Kbal Spean is a waterfall, with carving on the actual riverbed. Sometimes referred to as the river of a thousand lingas. It's about a 45 min. hike up ( get there early in the day to avoid the heat ) through the jungle where you will be met with a small river at the top. Go left and down and this is where you will find the waterfall. After rainy season is the best time to visit, as the waterfall is nice and full and you can swim at bottom ( November to March). During the dry season, if you like to hike, you will still enjoy it.
