Description
Perge is the closest Roman ruin to Antalya and one of the most significant ones, definitely well worth a visit. You can make a day of ruin hopping by combining it with visits to Aspendos, Termessos ... Read more
and perhaps even Side. The Great Theater and the Stadium of Perge are its most fascinating and still intact buildings, but the most photographed are the remnants of massive Hellenistic Roman gate towers because they are so extraordinary. Through the gates, there are remnants of a fine colonnaded street. The agora and southern baths are also worth exploring. The acropolis, on a nearby hilltop, has few extant buildings but gives a fine overall panorama of the ruins.

An acropolis that date the bronze age, 15km east on the plains of Antalya, Perge is not to be missed.
While it reached its apex during the Roman domination, there are remnants of the main civilizations of ancient times.

Next to Ephesus, Perge (also called Perga) has the most well preserved hellenistic ruins in Turkey. Alexander the Great conquered this area from the Persians and so most of the surviving ruins date from the beginning of Roman rule of the area (188 BC).

The site is about a 20 minute drive from the Antalya airport and 30 minutes from the city center. Well worth the drive as Perge is a spralling city of incredible ruins. Two large towers still standing mark the gates of the city. Bath houses with walls and tile still intact, and you are still able to see the heating system for the bath houses. There is a road leading out of the ruins, lined with columns that leads to the Nymphaeum. Probably the best part of Perge. The Nymphaeum was a huge fountain/statue (part still standing) where the water poured from and flowed into the city. Many of the intricate water systems of the city can still be seen today. AMAZING. Hopefully Perge will also be added to the UNESCO world heritage list.

Bring sunblock and water! I went in November and it was almost 80`F without any shade. Entrance is 15-20 Lira (~ 10 USD).

Perge is located 18 kms east of Antalya and 2kms north of Aksu Village, and is often combined with a visit to nearby Aspendos on organised tours. It is a worthwhile visit for anyone interested in ancient history, and contains some very well preserved structures.
