Sukayu Onsen is known for their large mixed gender public bath. Men's bath was located on the first floor (easy to find), while the women's bath was located on the second floor (hard to find, follow long corridor, keep to the left). Then the mixed gender bath can be found on the first floor, across from the men's bath entrance.

While you could stay here overnight as it is a ryokan, I came just for the day. The drive is long, windy and difficult during a snow storm when coming from Aomori-shi, but I think it's well worth the drive. It seems that if you stayed at Hakkoda Hotel, there is a shuttle that brings you to and from the hotel to the onsen.

I honestly had a hard time initially finding the women's bath. I didn't see any signs, not that I could read Japanese, but any arrow or indication of a female sign would have helped me. I had to ask for directions from hotel staff twice, the second lady had to show me to the door. After washing the body and taking a dip in the female baths, I was looking how to go to the mixed gender baths. I knew it was on the first floor, but still thought maybe there would be an entrance from the women's bath. No, it was completely separate! I had to put on my clothes again, enter the female side of the mixed gender bath, take off clothes again, and enter the bath.

The mixed gender bath was pretty fun! There is an imaginary line down the middle of each pool with signs indicated right side female and left side male only. My fiance and I met at this imaginary line and were able to chat while soaking in the bath. Watching other patrons, some families, I thought this mixed gender bath was great for families with small children because the children were able to see both their mother and father at the same time. I also noticed there were no wash stations in the mixed gender bath, so you would need to wash in the respective gender bath areas.

Overall, this was truly a unique experience with the mixed gender public bath. I would come again.
