Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value. The center founded in 1540 by a group of conquistadores is built of volcanic rock and is an amazing integration of indigenous and European characteristics and building techniques, brought about by the collaboration of the colonial rulers and the Indian masons. If history inspires, ancient cultures excite and the sight of an age-old colonial settlement transports you to another world, then you must visit the Historical Center of the City of Arequipa. The walls, archways, courtyards and open areas, vaults and the highly elaborate Baroque craftsmanship of the facades all point to the several influences that created this settlement.

Arequipa was founded shortly after the Spanish arrived and has a number of convents, churches, and colonial homes. The historical center constructed entirely of white sillar stone, and has one of the most beutiful main plazas in all of Peru. Besides the Plaza de Armas, the centuries-old Monasterio de Santa Catalina and Monasterio de las Carmelitas Descalzas de Santa Teresa de Arequipa are highlights of the historic center.
