Although I only breached the edge of Daisetsuzan National Park, I could tell it was an extraordinary place. Situated in the center of Hokkaido, Japan's largest national parks is prime territory for hikers. One caveat--hiking season doesn't begin until July. I was almost to the top of Mt. Kurodake and the snow was still very deep. I couldn't get anywhere without snowshoes. I'd love to come back in July or August and make the 2-3 day trek across to Asahikawa.

Unforgettably gorgeous national park on Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost main island. Be awed by the volcanic landscapes, painted with deep green forests and startlingly clear azure lakes. Great for hiking & scenic drives.

Daisetsuzan is really special but somehow remains off the beaten path for international tourists. The hiking here is exceptional -- beautiful flowers, snow capped peaks, and plenty of volcanic activity. Outdoor hot springs are a special treat.

Not every tourist / vacationer makes it to the northern island of Japan. If you happen to be one of the lucky few, take an afternoon and drive out to this national park.

If you're a nature buff, you'll love the views and the raw rugged beauty of the region. Also in the park is a pair of waterfalls that are just amazing to visit (Ryusei Waterfall & Ginga Waterfall).

Our hosts were kind enough to drive us down for a morning and we spent a good 2 hours wandering the grounds and just soaking up the nature. Shockingly beautiful!

Gorgeous waterfalls, spectacular gorges, raging rivers, and wonderful natural hiking trails are what visitors could find at the Daisetsuzan National Park in Hokkaido. The scenery here is quite breathtaking (especially if out of shape for the hikes!) but because the air is so clean here, catching each breath is refreshing
