between the mountains, which are within 15 miles of each other). Each varies in difficulty: Buttermilk is for beginners; Aspen Mountain is packed with expert runs; Aspen Highlands, though famous for its steep and bumpy Highland Bowl, has some beginner runs; and Snowmass, the largest of the four, has trails for all levels of skiers. The resort is owned and operated by the Aspen Skiing Company.

Aspen Mountain: 2 minutes walk to Gondola. Great intermediate to expert mountain. Tip: Bonnie's restaurant instead of Sundeck. Try the strudel--only better in Austria.
Buttermilk Mountain: a must-ski after nighttime snowfall. Many slopes are left ungroomed for that day so you can enjoy a few inches of fresh powder on top of yesterday's groom. Like riding on clouds.
Highlands: sophisticated, best runs in Aspen. You will not get bored here.
Snowmass: huge. don't let crowds at the bottom scare you. They all disperse after the first lift up. Wide open slopes, great for mixed groups of beginners and intermediate skiers. Many green and blue slopes

As single mountains, the four Aspen/Snowmass resorts would be highly ranked. Together they form one of the worlds premier snow sports experiences.

The Aspen-Snowmass Ski Resort is a worldclass set of mountains--Aspen Mountain/Ajax, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass--located in a gorgeous part of Colorado. They are spread out over 15-miles and have trails ranging from beginner to expert so there's pretty much something for everyone. Although each mountain seemingly operates independantly, lift tickets cover all four, which is great for a multi-day ski trip. (For ambitious skiiers short on time, there are free shuttles between the resorts--some for skiiers, some just for skis--if you want to try out a couple mountains in one day).

My favorite place in the resort is, hands down, Aspen Highlands. It's popular with locals, with amazing side-country skiing, steeps, and powder. Aspen Mountain/Ajax is a close second--the views are picture-postcard-perfect and it's location in downtown Aspen really can't be beat.

This is my favorite place to ski. We've gone to Snowmass for years, and love it. It's been a little sparse the past few years, probably because people have been worried about the snow quality (it was perfect this past December), and it is definitely very pricey.
