awesome summer daytrip, closed in winter. Exit Aspen to southeast. About 30 minutes drive. Enjoy great vistas and fresh air.
Ambitious cyclists welcome!
Continue to Leadville for lunch.

I call this White Knuckle Pass because there are no guard rails and quite a free fall if you go over the edge. But from Breckenridge it is a back way to Aspen. Go to Leadville and the pass road starts around the Twin Lakes area. It doesn't open until May, so it is a summer-only road, if that is what you want to call it. It is really more like a trail!!!

The drive over Independence Pass offers plenty of opportunities to explore. Check out the ghost town of Independence, hike up to a hidden lake, and take in the spectacular views from the top of the Continental Divide. There is no mobile reception anywhere on the journey.

Beautiful scenery the way up to the pass and great views from the top. There are also a couple of hikes to do on the way up if you are in the mood to.

Indie Pass is breathtakingly beautiful. You can enjoy a peaceful drive or you can bike to the summit. There are campgrounds and spots to pull over to relax or enjoy a lunch. When you reach the summit, you'll find yourself on the Continental Divide.
Indie Pass is closed for the winter because of snow.

If you're making your way between Denver and Aspen, consider taking the scenic route over 12,095-foot Independence Pass. Driving there, you'll wind through classic alpine countryside: soaring pines, shimmering aspens, icy lakes and reservoirs, rocky ridgelines, plus various trailheads and the historic mining town of Leadville. The last few miles are a series of steep switchbacks and dramatic overlooks, until you reach the pass, where there's a parking area, restrooms and short nature trail. Independence Pass is open May-ish to September-ish only, depending on the snowpack; it's closed through the winter.

With our house on the east side of aspen, you are in walking and biking distance to all the incredible things along the road to independence pass. Many great hikes, streams, and mountain lakes along the way! And don't forget to look to the right after you enter the gates to the pass from Aspen to see Kevin Costner's amazing spread on the right!

No where can you better find the beauty of the Fall season than in Aspen, Colorado on Independence Pass. The entire pass, starting on the east side to the grand reward on the west side is most ideal in very late September.

If you have extra time driving to or from Aspen during the summer, Independence Pass is a stunning mountain road along Route 82 between Aspen and Twin Lakes. Climbing above 12,000 feet, the road is slow, narrow, and curvy due to glaciers. There are plenty of scenic overlooks for breaks and pictures. Just make sure it's open before planning to take the pass; it's usually closed from November to late May because of snow.
