Atlantic City and the New Jersey Shore Vacations

Don't let the "reality" show fool you: The Jersey Shore is hardly defined by the antics of soap opera-worthy television characters. Heading 'down the shore,' is not only a completely "Joisey" thing to say, it's a quintessential summer ritual. The Shore leads from Sandy Hook in Connecticut to the resort town of Cape May, home to all manner of ... Read more
resorts, boardwalk carnival-like districts (like Seaside Heights), and plenty of entertainment and nightlife. On summer weekends, you might want to consider seaside camping over booking a room in the overpriced motels, but in the fall you'll find yourself quite able to enjoy the sights without being trampled. Atlantic City is the Las Vegas of the Jersey Shore, a partially woebegone remnant of past generations that is home to the longest boardwalk in the world, and dubbed "America's Playground."

Fun place to get away from the city. There's good shopping, the beach, and good food. What more can you ask for?!

Classic East Coast summer vacations are spent at the Jersey Shore. I've been around the world, but I will always judge every beach off of these New Jersey beaches. Here they are long, sandy, usually clean, sometime with healthy dunes, and nearly always crowded during the summer months between Memorial Day and Labor Day. To avoid crowds, come just outside this time period, but you may not have warm, sunny weather. Besides beaches, the Jersey Shore is packed with Americana in the form of boardwalks, arcades, and amusement rides. Plus mini golf, bars, and more ice cream parlors than one could imagine.

The Jersey Shore has long been the brunt of many a joke, but those who’ve been realize a good thing when they find it. Being a resident of the Garden State isn’t a requirement. New Jersey beaches are an easy drive from surrounding areas including New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware. Whether you rent a beach house, stay in a hotel or just come for the day, there’s an option for every budget. Lifeguards are on duty on many beaches throughout the summer, because unlike the West Coast, the water is warm. The Atlantic Ocean is known for hitting well into the 70s during the summer season.

Overall, I liked it. It was a family vacation by the beach - we stayed in Ocean City. Everything was nice, and I can understand why they call it "America's greatest family resort", though "resort" may not be the right word. Was good to have that hot, humid summer. Living in San Francisco, I miss it every now and then. Oh, Ocean City is a dry town.

This sorta cheesy sorta ironically cool destination is perfect for east coast Student Tribe members looking for a party and cheap beer. Rent a house 'down the shore' and discover the retro fun mini-golf games and bars lighting up the night.

Born and raised on the Jersey Shore it's where I'm from for better or worse! With the recent popularity of the reality TV show I can't escape hearing about my little corner of the world even when I'm all the way on the other side of the planet! I certainly come from a place of colorful characters and I can see why we make for good entertainment! But in all seriousness New Jersey and especially the shore have a lot of great things to offer!

My grandparents own a beach house right next to the ocean city boardwalk and my family would always visit in the summers. I have the best memories of walking along the boardwalk, playing minigolf, eating all the treats, and going on the carnival rides. The surf also gets pretty decent and I would spend most of my days jumping between the boardwalk and the beach.

Even though it's the seventh smallest state in the US, New Jersey enjoys one of the longest coastlines of sandy beaches in America. The Jersey Shore runs from Sandy Hook, eight miles due south from Manhattan, to Cape May. Along the way you find sheltered inlets, popular beaches, bars, nightclubs, boardwalks and even casinos. This is the land that has inspired the songs of artists from Tom Waits to Bruce Springsteen (who was born in Freehold and still sometimes shows up at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park).

Atlantic City and the Jersey Shore are iconic for different reasons. I wouldn't say that either are absolute must sees, but if you are living in the Mid-Atlantic region it is probably worth your time to check out the area
