the city, the surrounding ramparts and the remains of a 12th-century bridge over the Rhone. Beneath this outstanding example of Gothic architecture, the Petit Palais and the Romanesque Cathedral of Notre-Dame-des-Doms complete an exceptional group of monuments that testify to the leading role played by Avignon in 14th century Christian Europe. This group of monuments was inscribed by UNESCO in 1995 to the World Heritage List.

A most beautiful medieval city once the home of the papacy. Plenty of pedestrianised streets, cafes, restaurants, parks and views over the river. There is the famous bridge " Sur le Pont d'Avignon" to admire.

Spend a full day in Avignon, stroll through the narrow streets and have lunch on the main plaza. Visit the Palais des Papes and walk on the half bridge across the Rhone. A beautiful city, not to be missed during your Provence vacation

AVIGNON
Sur le pont d’Avignon, L’on y danse. Sur le pont d’Avignon, L’on y danse tout en rond. On the bridge of Avignon, we all dance there. On the bridge of Avignon, We all dance there in a ring. This old French folk song, I think you know it, was meant to play for folk dances. The Avignon bridge, over the Rhone river, is still to be seen, or better what is left of it. Avignon, her nickname is; The Rhone Babylon, is a beautiful place, especially the square Place d’Horloge and the Papal Palace.
Between 1309 and 1377 during the Avignon Papacy, seven successive popes resided in Avignon and in 1348 Pope Clement VI bought the town from Joanna I of Naples. Papal control persisted until 1791.

Described as mini Barcelona but also the most beautiful town in France. Avignon is stunning and only 25 minute leisurely drive away from Gordes.

Avignon is a remarkable piece of gothic architecture. The papal palace and the bridge are everything you imagine as a kid from middle aged castle stories. Lots of olive trees sit in the middle of these stunning constructions.

We tend to think of Rome when we think of the Papacy, but for a short period of time the center of the catholic church was actually Avignon. The historic center and the papal palace are very impressive, and should be on any list of things to see in Provence

A great day trip. It is an hours drive into Avignon from Chez Bellevue. Once there, soak up the history of all of the above mentioned. You can pick up headphones and be guided in all languages and learn about all aspects of the town. Have lunch in one of the many restaurants on the promenade outside the Maire or down one of the small back streets where the locals and students eat.
The Avignon Fete is always popular in July and worth a visit.
