The Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal, are an archipelago in the mid-Atlantic. The islands are characterized by dramatic landscapes, fishing villages, green pastures and hedgerows of blue hydrangeas. The islands are very different depending on their location.

I've stayed on Terceira a few times during stopovers on a few transatlantic flights and every time I've felt that I'm in Ireland with its greenery and landscape. You just don't feel like you are on a Portuguese island.

I'm headed to Portugal in early March with plans to visit some beach communities along the coast. I have been advised that the weather in March along the coast, however, is iffy. For Portugal, your best bet would be the Algarve; Rick Steves' recommendations in that area are the villages of Sagres, Salema and Lagos. I'll be headed in that direction. My friends have suggested the islands of the Azores for a warmer, more sun-filled days. Plane connections out of Lisbon, however, are limited. Much better out of LHR (and a little on the expensive side).

The Azores are a bunch of islands in the middle of the Atlantic. I stopped there for night to refuel a charter plane. It looks a lot like Portugal with its red-tiled buildings. It's very green.

The Azores are a very unique set of islands. Thick with history and tradition, and great food! For how beautiful it is, it is surprising how few tourists you find. You'll find rolling green hills, fields of flowers, waterfalls, craters, geysers and a great underwater landscape for scuba diving. Visiting the Azores will not disappoint!

It was so awesome to visit the home land, like I was tracing the steps of my ancestors, who practiced the art of making, then drinking really strong wine!

Wild, mountainous islands a short flight from Boston. Lots of great food and wine (mostly from the islands) all to be had on small islands. Public transport is good, or distances are so small that you can easily drive yourself to see all that you are interested in. Very interesting history, both Portuguese and whaling industry related. There's a lot to see, and not many tourists. Loved our trips there.
