Anantara is pure heaven for adventure and nature enthusiasts who love a bit of pampering. Spend your day's horse riding, scuba diving, sandboarding exploring nearby Paradise Island or watching the sunset onboard a traditional dhow boat.

The hotel itself has top-class service, and the quality of food is on par with the very best resorts I've been to around the world. I highly recommend staying at the deluxe villa nearest to the spa for a breathtaking view of the ocean.

The perfect place for adventurers looking for a little bit of extra comfort.

The Anantara is the most luxurious property on Bazaruto. The property is in the midst of transition and, as of my visit, is still in the growing pains of evolving from a mid-tier predecessor to its 5 star ambitions under new ownership. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Anantara and would recommend it but it still has a few rough edges that may not appeal to those seeking a luxurious romantic escape.

My favorite things about the property:

- beautiful location and beach on Indigo Bay
- spacious rooms
- friendly staff that try very hard to please
- convenience of an all-inclusive
- an adult-only pool option which is pleasant and quiet
- rotating food options and dining venues to keep dinner from getting boring on a multi-day stay
- top notch transfer service from Vilanculos airport. Nothing says vacation like having to give up your shoes
- first class spa facility

The biggest detractors for me:

- our room had great bones but was a bit frumpy with old carpeting, outdated plumbing, and visible cracks in the plunge pool
- breakfast and dinner are buffet style which is convenient but makes dinner less intimate than it would be if it were a la carte (you can pay for private dining on the beach or in another location)
- few Mozambican food options (though they usually have a curry and do grilled seafood every night -- including giant prawns on some evenings)
- the web-based booking system for activities is disconnected from the property. You'll need to reconfirm all details after arrival and prices differ a little (some more some less) if you book online in advance. You also need to check your bill to make sure you aren't double charged

We had a fantastic stay and I would certainly choose this property again. In its current state, it falls just a hair short for those seeking a 5 star romantic get away. Once it has been renovated, it will undoubtedly be very posh (and likely more expensive). Adventurers seeking a little extra comfort in an exotic emerging tourism destination will be thrilled. The property is also good for families -- plenty of kids areas and the beach is shallow and protected. Like the adults, kids should also be thrilled with the range of food on offer.

Guests have the option to choose between smaller beachfront villas and large cliff-side villas with private plunge pools. We chose the latter because of the privacy and had no trouble accessing the beach or finding a hammock and shade near the water. If I were to choose again, I'd choose my room type based on the renovation schedule and would opt for the most recently renovated room type.

The dhow sunset cruise was a highlight. The excursion to Sailfish Bay is also highly recommended. I've never had such a long stretch of beach all to myself before.

During our stay, another room had all of its cash stolen. Be sure to use the in-room safe.
