Belarus was definitely more "Western" than I expected, with Germany-esque churches and castles, polished and clean streets, and even a hipster cafe in Minsk filled with iced latte-drinking hipsters working on their MacBook Airs. Certainly not my initial thoughts of what the country often dubbed as the "last dictatorship in Europe" would look like! But it still felt closed off, as few people speak English, there are next to no tourists (even during the Ice Hockey World Championship, when the subway system, in a rare instance, added English street names) and the only "ethnic food" I could find was pizza. People were also very friendly and helpful once I started talking to them, even if we only had a shared vocabulary of 20 words. One big paradox, though: even though the average monthly salary of Belarus is $600, most hotels cost at least 1/6 of that per night for foreigners: unfortunately there's not the demand for tourism, yet, to keep costs down.
