up to 14 kilometres in length. Divers have reported a vast number of aquatic creatures some of which are still new to science. In addition, they’ve recorded chambers filled with stalactites and stalagmites which only form in dry caves. For the explorers this was proof that at one time, nearly 65,000 years ago, when the world was in the grip of the last major ice age, the sea level of the Bahamas was up to 150 metres lower than it is today. Over time the limestone of the islands was eroded by water and vast cave networks created. When sea levels rose again about 10,000 years ago some of these collapsed inwards and the Blue Holes were formed.

Pretty epic dive, you literally just drop straight down over 100ft if you want, and then can swim around the hole. there are reef sharks and other fish just circling along the hole with you.

I had the great fortune to dive the Blue Hole on my 25th birthday. It was incredible. First of all, the boat ride out there took about two hours from Caye Caulker, and featured the most turquoise water you'd ever seen. Once at the site, the contrast between the turquoise and the deep blue of the hole was stark. The dive itself featured a decent to 40m, epic swims around giant stalagtites, and the potential to see hammerheads from below. It definitely is an expensive dive due to the boat ride, but well well worth it to do once.

A natural wonder, the Blue Hole is an amazing and scary dive spot. Located 60 miles offshore, it is an "almost perfectly circular hole approximately one quarter of a mile (.4 km) across" and 480 feet (145 m) deep. It's named the Blue Hole because the depth of water gives it such an intense blue color. From an aerial view of the Blue Hole, it looks like a giant deep blue pupil surrounded by turquoise waters. As you dive down to ~130 feet, you'll see stalactites and limestone formations against the cave wall. The dive company I went with, took us down 140 ft, and I saw about 7 reef sharks swimming around. That was pretty sick, and scary. Definitely check this one off your diving bucket list.

There's a lot to be said about the Blue Hole. Many people believe that it is over rated. It does cost quite a bit to get out there and you are diving to 100+ feet on an AL80. However, I believe that this is still a must do at least once dive. The hole itself is an ancient cave that eventually ended up under the ocean and collapsed in on itself. There are stalactites and stalagmites 100+ feet down and those could not have formed if the cave was always submerged. There isn't a whole lot of life on the rock walls so you are really looking at the formations. There are reef sharks that tend to swim around and in the center of the hole. Whatever you may think of the blue hole itself, the following dives at the lighthouse reef atoll are absolutely amazing. I would do this trip multiple times just for those dives. It's still a definite must for a diver!
