Description
The Cheese Board opened as a small cheese store in 1967. In 1971, the two original owners sold their business to their employees and created a 100% worker owned business of which they remained a part. ... Read more
The transition to a worker-owned and operated cooperative relied upon a shared work ethic, high standards, and the strong emotional connections among the group. Decisions were made, after much debate, either on the shift or at the monthly meetings. The new owners shared a belief that the collective process would organically create a truly democratic society.

This is where Berkeley goes to eat Pizza. Always a line, always jazz, always plenty of people watching. The pizza is pretty good too.

While their hours says they close at 8PM, there are still over 20 groups in line at 8PM. But since there's always a line, come before you are too hungry to stand. There's only one (and always vegetarian) option, one salad option, and dessert. In other words, all you have to decide is how much pizza you can eat and whether or not you want salad and/or dessert. Pizza is bomb here, but it's definitely on the oily side. Cheese is so nicely melted on the pie and even the crust. But be careful, the pizza crust is crunchy and hard and the topping are hot when it first comes out, so chew and eat slowly to avoid injuring the inside of mouth (I always do and it really hurts!)

The Cheeseboard is famous for pizza that everyone loves - always vegetarian and always loaded with olive oil and great toppings on a chewy sourdough crust. No one asks what the flavor of the day is as they know they'll like it - plus there is always a band playing at lunch or dinner time. Great salads and buffalo milk soft serve too!

The Cheese Board Pizza Collective is a Berkeley institution. They do one type of pizza daily, always vegetarian, and they do it well. Get a slice for $2.75, half pie for $11, or a whole for $22.

The cheese Board is a local cooperative with two venues next door to each other. You can't miss it because the City of Berkeley gave them the sidewalk to convert into a sidewalk cafe where Jazz resounds during most lunchtimes.
The shop has one of the largest varieties of the best cheeses found in the world. They bake fresh breads and scones, muffins, cookies, savory pastries of many kinds.
Gluten-free breads offered.
Pizza served daily next door where the Jazz band is playing. Just follow the line to the pizza. Gluten free pizza offered. Just ask. Even gluten-free and dairy free pizza...amazing, considering they are the Cheese Board!

This is considered the first 4th of the Berkeley Pizza grand slam. Here you can get a slice or a pie of pizza at an affordable price. There's not much oil in the pizza which is nice.

The best cheese, scones, and pizzas in their side-by-side stores. Wait lines can be long at lunch. Get in early and take home to eat!

Whether you visit Berkeley to see the Campus or to try some of the amazing food at the Gourmet Ghetto, you will see people walking around with pizza boxes.
There is only one pizza that students and foodies alike carry with pride along Shattuck Ave, showing off the great accomplishment of having something everybody else wants, after enduring the 20 minute line in the street, and crowding the side walks, crossing paths, road divider and everything that could ever be crowded to eat a slice of heaven: it is Cheese Board pizza.
The wait is well worth it, this is one of the most affordable and delicious eats in Berkeley's Gourmet Ghetto and it goes without saying that the quality of the pizza is beyond believe.
On top of all that cheese goodness the Cheese Board Pizza is a coop, yes, a business owned by the workers, that promotes fair wages and the use of fresh local ingredients.

Crazy good pizza. They make one pizza combination a day, and it's awesome. They also have gluten free options!

Long wait for delicious pizza. A local favorite. Pizzas always hot and fresh. Be sure to tag team and grab a seat whilst the rest of your party orders the pizza

Unique pizza place, by the slice or full pizza. They offer one flavor daily, but use fresh/seasonal ingredients. Live local, music artists daily.

Takes me back to college days...

Freshman year this was one of the spots that was all the hype. Buy a cheeseboard pizza, bring it to the center street divider, and enjoy with friends!

I was always a big fan of the corn pizza! We sometimes would top it off with a little bit of sriracha sauce. Potato comes in second for me.

We always had to constantly check what the pizza of the day was and sometimes would even buy a half frozen one for later since the pizza is different every day.

How did they make an eggplant, vegetarian pizza taste like sausage? Magic. Crust wasn't extremely greasy. But seriously, that eggplant was magic.

Options to buy a slice, half ($10) or whole pizza ($20). Line moved fast, but seating is limited. So we ended up taking our pizza home to enjoy.

You can find out what their pizza of the day is on their website. Takes card, street parking.

The Cheese Board Pizza is a must for any visitors to the area. It is the best Pizza in the area plus they usually have a great Jazz band playing and folks are eating on outdoor tables and on the grassy knoll across the street. It is one of the places that makes Berkeley Berkeley.

Great Pizza (especially the crust) at a very good price. They do great things with vegetarian combinations, some of which don't always suit me. I usually get a half pie (light bake), take it home and wash it down with a nice beer or a glass of wine.

On the Bakery Side there's a robust selection of cheese and the best Corn Cherry Scones ever. Don't be intimidated by the crowds, as the line moves quickly. And viewing the Berkeley wildlife is a real bonus.

Cheeseboard is the legendary oft-mentioned bakery in Berkeley that serves up some pretty tasty pizza slices. While I wouldn't call it traditional or even NY-style, it's definitely gourmet and unique to its own. Cheeseboard also serves a variety of delicious breads and pastries. It's one of those places where you go and maybe wish you hadn't, because you'll be craving it for days on end.

Great for grown-ups! Kids may not love the pizza of the day (it's never just plain cheese), but they do like the live music during lunch.
