      Berlin Hotel Insider
Germany’s capital is a thriving city, both ancient and modern at the same time. It’s both a business and finance district as well as a popular nightlife city for European (and international) youth, alive with just as many Wi-Fi cafes as nightclubs. Whether you ponder the past Berlin’s many museums, rock out in one of the trendy bunker techno clubs, or simply indulge in traditional German fare at one of the great restaurants, Berlin is hard-pressed to disappoint you. To accommodate all manner of its travelers, the city is equipped with nearly 1,000 hotels, ranging from backpacker hostels to the downright opulent Adlon Kempinski.

      Berlin Hotels
Hotels in Berlin typically cater to one of two major travel styles: business and backpackers. While there are plenty of lodging options that cover all travelers in between, the city’s reputation for both finance and culture seem to sway most hotelier’s design intentions. Business travelers will find convenience in both location and amenities at hotels like Melia Berlin, the Scandic in Potsdamer Platz, and the Park Plaza Wallstreet Berlin, though big name brands like the Ritz-Carlton, InterContinental, and NH have their share of real estate here, too. The Grand Hotel Esplanade is a top choice among those on business, with its abundance of conference space, oversized bedrooms, and in-house facilities like a gym and award-winning restaurants.

Students and backpackers pass through Berlin often to party, soak up some culture, and witness a taste of history, whether they’re on a multi-city European trek or just flying here for the weekend. Since it’s such a staple on any European itinerary, the city is chock-full of hostels and budget motels for the young and restless. The centrally-located Circus Hostel is a favorite among backpackers, with comfortable beds and the rare buffet breakfast (provided at the attached cafe.) Baxpax Downtown is another top choice near Friedrichstrass, with each room decorated in its own unique style (like “underwater” and “the funky 60s”) and an in-house pub for young socialites. Ostel - the DDR Hostel is a not-so-subtle hark back to the Cold War, with kitschy 1970s decor, bare furnishings, and a rather bleak interior - but what it lacks in modern style it makes up for in character, efficient free Wi-Fi, and a cheap breakfast buffet.

For those visiting Berlin for leisure, and who don’t call themselves students or backpackers, there is a wide range of mid-priced and budget-friendly hotels that do the trick. The Upstalsboom Hotel may be a bit far from the most visited tourist spots, but it’s on a quiet street in up-and-coming Friedrichshain, near the East Side Gallery and the River Spree, and features free breakfast as part of an already surprisingly affordable rate. For those with edgier taste, try Pension Funk: built in 1895 and home to former silent film star Asta Nielson, the hotel’s Victorian elegance and old-fashioned photographs from decades past offer a reprieve from the city’s hustle and bustle.

No matter where you stay, check the calendar first: big festivals like Christopher St Day and New Year's cause prices to skyrocket, and rooms fill up well in advance.

      Things To Do in Berlin
Berlin is chockablock full of sights and activities to keep even the most discerning traveler busy for days. Don’t miss the Brandenburg Tor (Gate), Checkpoint Charlie, or the Berlin Wall, but venture off the beaten path and dig into the city’s rich culture as well. The Reichstag is worth a tour, and the Holocaust Memorial is as haunting as it is sobering. Browse one of the many markets, like Hackescher Markt or the Flohmarkt in Mauerpark, for homemade goods and organic foods. You can also swim in the River Spree’s sectioned-off pool, Badeschiff, which is a great activity if you’re toting the young’uns.

Of course, this is Germany - and one of the country’s claims to fame is beer. Little else is more characteristic of central Europe than whiling away an afternoon at a cafe or biergarten: try Möbel Olfe, with a Bohemian feel, or the more raucous Prinzknecht, popular with the LGBT community and known for a no-holds-barred atmosphere (fair warning.)

If you’re pressed for time, you’ll get a good introduction by walking Unter den Linden, the downtown spine of the city filled with restaurants, cafe, and shops. You’ll also see the U.S. Embassy, the Zeughaus, and cross Museum Island, where you can step back in time at the Historical Museum, the Old National Gallery, and the Bode Museum (filled with European and Byzantine art). Here, the SoHo House or the boutique Honigmond Garden Hotel are great places to hang your hat for the night. ... Read more
