church in Prussia, by King Fredrerick II's concession. The Nazis corrupted the beauty of this place when they picked this square on 10 May 1933 for the book burning ceremony, against books viewed as subversive or as representing ideologies opposed to Nazism. There is a memorial right on the ground. Look for a glass plate in the cobbles, it gives a view of empty bookcases, big enough to hold the 20,000 burnt-by-Nazis books.

This square is a must for any day spent exploring Berlin, and it can easily be worked into any itinerary as it is close to many other attractions. It is very close to the university building, and opera house. The main reason to come to this square is because of its historical importance, as it was the sight of the Nazi book burning ceremonies. There is a memorial in the form of a glass plate set into the ground, through which you can see empty bookshelves. Look out for the engraved plaque which has a great, though provoking quote on it.

Also known as Book Burning Square, Bebelplabtz is a square outside Humboldt University and was one of the sights of the infamous Nazi book burnings that took place around Germany. Around 20,000 books that were seen as subversive to the Nazi regime were burnt here and are commemorated with a creative memorial installation.

If you're a history buff or book-lover, this plaza will be of particular interest. This is where the Nazi book burnings occurred, where thousands upon thousands of books were burned in a single day. Now you'll find a memorial in the ground here - a glass window allows you to look down into a sort of room where all the walls are empty bookshelves. There's a plaque with a quote to the effect of: "Where books are burned, in the end people will burn."
