Description
When you visit Berlin, you notice one of the starkest reminders of the war: The Kaiser-Wilhelm Gedachtniskirche. Here, you see not only the damage inflicted by a 1943 British air raid, but a chapel: ... Read more
the church retains the marks of the air raid as a memorial. While here, you can see the "Stalingrad Madonna," a poignant sketch made by a soldier in 1942. Don't miss the exhibition about the church and its restoration, either. Finally, save time to explore the outside courtyard of the church, as many talented buskers perform here.

A major Berlin landmark, the site of a church which took a direct hit from a bomb during WWII. The new part of the church is strikingly fused on to what remains of the original structure.

An outstanding 19th century church that was damaged, and stands ruined as a reminder of WW2 along the busy stretch of Kurfürstendamm.

The remnants of this church are a Berlin icon and a must-see. The juxtaposition between two modern blue structures gives it just the right hint of drama needed to make it memorable.

Did you know that the church is called -due to its shape- the Hollow Tooth by Berliners?

The original church was badly damaged in a bombing raid in 1943. The present building, which consists of a church with an attached foyer and a separate belfry with an attached chapel, was built between 1959 and 1963. The damaged spire of the old church has been retained and its ground floor has been made into a memorial hall. The new chapel includes blue glass, also used in Chartres Cathedral in France, that gives off a quiet light.

The remains of a church destroyed during an air raid in 1943, attached to which is, to me, a rather hideous modern church. Worth going to see the exhibition in the memorial hall

An impressive church and memorial to the horrors of war - the original church was built in the late 1800s and bombed into ruins in World War II. They had originally planned to demolish it and build a new church in its place, but public demand saw the ruins incorporated into the new structure. Next to the old building is an ultra-modern blue tower and a few shorter buildings. It creates an impressive dichotomy between old and new. The old structure was covered in scaffolding for extensive renovation from 2010 through 2013.

Don't forget to visit the church nearby. It's a place of silence where you can calm down from the loud Kurfürstendamm.

my heart was overwhelmed with sadness and joy at the same time when I saw "the Church of Memories".

This partly reconstructed church, a symbol of the old and the new Berlin at once, was supposed to be one of the highlights of my trip. Well, maybe next time - the older section of the church was under renovation and covered from top to bottom so that was that.
