Visit this ancient city and monument, recognized as UNESCO heritage site. It is located about 80 km east of Bishkek. Make sure to check out balbals and petroglyphs.

Kyrgyzstan doesn't have many Silk Road monuments, but this is one of them. Burana Tower is a large minaret in the Chuy Valley located about 80 km east of Bishkek, near the town of Tokmok. Besides the tower, there are historic grave markers, some earthworks, and the remnants of a castle and three mausoleums. They were all part of the ancient city of Balasagun. It is possible to climb to the top of the tower to get a view of the surrounding countryside. The tower was originally 45 m (148 ft) high but a 15th-century earthquake destroyed the top half of the tower, reducing it to its current height of 25 m (82 ft).

This tower is located just outside of Bishkek, so it's an easy day trip or a place to hit on your way in or out of the city. It was the last stop on our tour before landing back in Bishkek. Walking up to the top of the tower was easy and it provided some good views of the Tian Shan mountains. My favourite part was the grave markers on the grounds of the Tower. The Burana Tower is all that remains of the Karakhanid feudal state dating back to the 10th century. For any history buffs out there, it's one of the oldest sites to see in the country.

Local from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

This is one of the most visually impressive remnants of Kyrgyzstan's Silk Road history in the country, and certainly the most accessible from the capital city of Bishkek. Don't expect the huge sites of somewhere like Bukhara or Samarkand in Uzbekistan, but the Burana Tower does have an interesting history and the landscape surrounding it in the Kyrgyz countryside is quite beautiful. If at all possible, try to combine a visit here with a trip to the Animal Bazaar in the city of Tokmok just north of Burana.

Certainly the most architecturally impressive thing I saw in Kyrgystan. This gorgeous tower stands in a wide open field with a lovely mountainous backdrop. Great for photos. One of the more distinctive stops during my trip through the region. Full of the romanticism of the silk road.

Cette belle tour est à quelques minutes en taxi de la petite ville de Tokmok, presque 80 kilometres de Bichkek. Essayez d'y arriver plus tôt dans l'après-midi, car le site va clôturer avant 17h.
