Making innovative breakthroughs in the architectural development of Boston and New England in general, the sleek John Hancock Tower on 200 Clarendon Street is an unmistakable, modern icon in the ... Read more
oldest US city. Pei Cobb Freed & Partners designed the business center for John Hancock Insurance Company. Defying conventional constructions, the 60-story glass giant in glistening black reflects the sky and is considered the tallest structure of the 1970s. Gracing the Boston skyline with distinct dignity, the building stands 790 feet tall next to Trinity Church and Boston Public Library. Oddly, when the skyscraper starts to sway with the wind or reacts to climate changes, the 44-square-foot glass panes do not. Plus, the building is twisting and bending from the middle like a person getting a tummy ache. With the loss of 65 of the 10,340+ panes as a result of their separation from the lead solder and crashing to the ground, the building undergoes constant inspection and repair. Currently, dampeners and steel braces weighing thousands of tons are in place to decrease the torsion. The observation tower is closed. In any case, rest assured, the Hancock is still a sight to see.

You gotta go to the top for the view. It's amazing. Or even better check out the Top of the Hub restaurant at the top of the Prudential. Love it!!

I always like to go to the highest building to look out the observatory and from here you can get a great bird's eye view of Boston and beyond.

One of most beautiful view of Chicago and The Lake. Forget the Sears Tower, this is a building with an actual view.

Just a Boston staple. A cool building to see and right next to other things you can actually interact with.

One of the city's iconic buildings, and located in a nice area to walk around. This tower was designed by IM Pei's firm, and is still remembered around the city for the engineering problems when it first went up, where the glass panels detached and crashed to the sidewalk below. Luckily, this doesn't happen anymore!

Some of the coolest reflections on the side of the building, awesome pictures from any vantage point.

Also, don't pay to see Chi via the Sears Tower (don't you dare call it by any other name, lol) or the viewing room at the Hancock. Go up to the Signature lounge at the Hancock building, especially close to sunset, and see the city for free. They have yummy cocktails and excellent chocolate cake to dine on as you take in the beauty that is our City of Wind. Also, the view from the Woman's Washroom is the absolute very best view of the city (sorry gents!).
