Bridgetown Vacations

Colorful colonial charm, a bustling deep-water harbor and tropical climate, Bridgetown is everything you'd expect from a capital city of the West Indies. Named for the Arawak Indian bridge that once spanned the Careenage waterway, Bridgetown was amongst Great Britain's most important New World possessions. Today, the original bridge has been ... replaced by the Chamberlain Bridge and marks the city's cultural center, lying adjacent to the Barbadian parliament, the National Heroes Square and several historic religious centers. Be sure to tour one of Bridgetown's excellent rum factories, shop for gifts along Broad Street, and get a grasp on Caribbean history at the Barbados Museum and the Tyrol Cot, an unique nineteenth-century home of post-war politicians.

Pittsford (town), New York

This is an interesting town to walk around and see the locals and the sights. We found it walkable from the port and enjoyed seeing the street markets. Lots of jewelry stores and taxi hustlers.

Cool little city that is a mix of brand new buildings and streets and store fronts that look like they are from the 1800's. I ended up getting a Police Escort to take me from the Jitney bus area in the back of town to the main areas...Please note...not because the city is dangerous, it for the most part is not...simply because the people are so friendly when I asked a Police Woman for directions...she said I'll show you...and walked me all the way. This is one of the safest islands.

Local from Bridgetown, Barbados

Bridgetown, and the nearby Garrison, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A walking tour, using a map or Foursquare, is a great way to explore the city and see it's historic sites.

Some spots to look out for are: Parliament Buildings (3rd oldest parliament in the western hemisphere), statue of Lord Nelson, the Old Spirit Bond building and St, Mary's Church. Have a look at http://barbados.org/historic-bridgetown-garrison-barbados-interactive.htm for other heritage spots.

A walk through Queen's Park is highly recommended. Be sure to see the solar house at the western entrance and historic Baobab tree which is over 1000 years old.

There are lots of places to have lunch in Bridgetown but the Waterfront Cafe is particularly nice.

Do duty-free shopping on Broad Street and stop by Pelican Craft Village for local craft and art.

This is a tiny little sea side city with great shopping and lots of tourist activities. The port is lovely the buildings are full of such architectural history and beauty that's common of the tropical islands.

We visited here while on a cruise this past March. We were a large group and we hired a driver for the day. He was excellent..his name is Clyde and he is a very sweet man. Anyway, he took around the sites and then back to the ship where a few people stayed back. After lunch he took us to the beach and we arranged the our pick up time. The beach was absolutely beautiful (Carlisle Bay Beach) and we had a great time. While we were waiting for our driver to come back to get us we were constantly hounded by other taxi's who wanted to "help" us out. It was awful. It was so bad that they even approached us and handed my husband the phone saying it was Clyde and he couldn't get back to get us because he was tied up in traffic. It was all a lie and when we were getting worried and prepared to take another cab, Clyde rolled up and saved us. He did not call us, nor did he tell anyone he would be late. It was a scam. Needless to say, we were all pretty shaken up. I loved the country and it's beautiful landscape, but I can tell you I will NEVER go there again. It's is a shame that people have to be so rude and disrespectful to their fellow workers and not to mention vacationers. It certainly tainted our experience and I have told everyone about our experience and warned them not to go there. I think it was mostly because we were a large group and an easy target for some big $$. Of course, we hadn't paid Clyde yet for our day..but his "buddies" were more than willing to take our money to "give to him later". What a shame, for a country that relies on tourism, they certainly need to take a better look at all areas of what the island covers.
