Description
Budapest's Castle District was, in ancient time, the gleaming capital of the land. To this day, to reach Castle Hill, one must cross the ramparts that encircle it; inside are the Royal Palace, the ... Read more
remains of the Dominican monestary, a monument memorializing the city's deaths from the plague, and a medieval street network that has remained basically unaltered for centuries. Look past the overpriced restaurants and food stands and you will see the magical remnants of an ancient city.

The Buda Castle and its surrounding area are a nice place to take a stroll and take in the sights of the river and the surrounding lands. Take the funicular up and walk your way down to save some money.

I was at the Pest part of city during night and I was amazed with shining Castle District. I can see that the area is beautiful but at night looks even better.

The old heart of the city. After the legends got its name from Attila's (the Hun) brother. He was Buda. If You want to go back in the centuries, go up to the hill and You can enjoy the medieval history, architecture of the city. Nice cafés, restaurant and pastry shops. Stop at Ruszwurm confectionery near Matthias Churh for a slice of cake with a good coffee.

It's like being in a completely different world than Pest. The architecture and views afforded are charming and there's just a quieter, calmer feel. Next time I will definitely stay in the Castle District!

It was my favorite part of town. You can go there and see the castles, museums and all kinds of great things. They also have a lot of little shops and cafes up there, mostly for tourists. It is also a good place to go if you want to get your fortune told. I'm just saying.

I recommend visiting this at night, since the views are gorgeous - you can see all the castle and the parliament building all lit up from across the river.

If you are staying on the Pest side of the river, I'd recommend taking an evening to walk along the river, cross the chain bridge on foot (be warned, there are lots of spiders along the railing on the bridge so if you are squeamish, like I am, you might want to not look too closely at the metal railings on the sides and just stay focused on the view).

The bridge is gorgeous at night. Once you cross to the Buda side, there's a little tram that you can pay to go up to the the hill to where the castles are. Don't do it! There is nice little walking path that will take you up to the same spot, for free. It will take you a little longer, but you'll enjoy the nice little walk up the hill, trust me. Along the way there are many platforms and little courtyards you'll come across. Stop at these and enjoy the view of the river, trust me on this.

Once you get to the top, there will be another breath-taking view of the entire river bank. Everything is lit up at night. (Side note, if you want to eat up here, make sure to come before 9:00 pm. All the restaurants close by 9:00 and you won't be able to find anything.)

After admiring the view at the top, continue walking along the ridge of the hill towards the Basilica. Once you're done exploring, there is a bus that will take you down into the city. The bus stop is right next to the basilica, at the top of the hill. The busses go every 1 hour, so be sure to check the times on the plackard at the bus stop.

The Castle District comprises the region of Buda from the Chain Bridge up to Fisherman's Bastion, Saint Matthias Cathedral and Buda Castle. These are some of the most important buildings in the city and ground zero for a first time visitor.

For a breathtaking view of Budapest, there's no better place to go than the castle district. The cobblestone streets, the picturesque landscape during the day, and the twinkling view at night makes this the most romantic spot in the city.
