One of the biggest Synagogues in the world, who would have expected it to be in Hungary? Beautiful architecture.

The centerpiece of the Jewish Quarter is the immaculate Great Synagogue. This is the largest synagogue in Europe, an architectural gem and is always bustling with activity. Intricate details cover every surface of this nearly 175 year old house of worship and services here can see up to 3,000 people.

Local from Budapest, Hungary

The second biggest and the greatest neolog synagogue of the world. Opened in 1859. Fascinating complex built in orientalistic-byzanthic-moor style which symbolize the origin of the Jews. Hungarian Jews turned to the neolog (reformed) trend of the curch, thatswhy have most of the synagogues of Hungary this unique shape and outfit. You can visit daily or enjoy nice concerts at evenings.

This is the largest synagogue in Europe, and it is really stunning. One of the most interesting features is the willow tree in the outside garden. It is a memorial to those who died or disappeared during the Holocaust. Their names and tattoo numbers are on the shimmering leaves.

Sadly didn't get to go in this as it was fenced off during a far right demonstration. I gather that it has been beautifully restored.

Beautiful building and really interesting to have a look around. There is a memorial in the shape of a willow tree there which is really nice as well. Worth a visit!

The Dohany Street Synagogue is a unique and fascinating structure. It is the largest active synagogue in Europe and second largest synagogue in the world. Take note: there is a charge to enter the synagogue and an additional fee in order to be permitted to take photographs.

Due to timing problems we did not go into this lovely Synagogue but just seeing the exterior alone is extremely impressive. Two great domes catch the color of the sunsets and are magestic and beautiful. Also houses the Jewish Museum and a fountain memorial garden for Holocaust victims.

Be sure to take the guided tour. The most impressive part of the synagogue is the history of the place and the people who built it. The memorials on the grounds are beautiful testaments not only to the suffering of the Jewish people, but to those who risked and lost their lives resisting the Nazis.
