Description
Budapest wasn’t always known by its current moniker. Before the two sides of the Danube joined as one, they were known as “Buda”, located on the west bank, and “Pest”, the eastern and mostly flat two ... Read more
thirds of the city. This is where visitors will find the stunning Parliament Building, the ethnographic museum, the Zoological Gardens, St. Stephen Cathedral, and László Morton’s Little Princess Statue. While the exact etymology of the name is not known, it is suspected that “Pest” comes from the Slavic word "пещера” or “peshtera", meaning cave. This refers to a cave in the city where fires burned and acted as a furnace.

Pest is the flat side of the city and the largest portion. It's the much more walkable side as you're not going up and down hills!

Buda-Pest, where Pest is the east side of the Danube river, as opposed to Buda which is the older side on the west.

Buds and Pest is separate by Danube River. Buda Castle is the historicsk castle and mostly hills. But Pest is like pancake and flat.

The city of Budapest began its existence as three separate cities: Obudai, Buda and Pest. Today Buda is known for the museums and castles while Pest is where the action is. Most of the best clubs and restaurants are in Pest. Szechenyi Baths, Hero Square and Andrassy Avenue are all in Pest.

The Pest side of the city is home to Szent Istvan's Basilica, the Opera House, the Holocaust memorial (Shoes on the Danube), the Dohány Street Synagogue, Hungarian Parliament, Great Market Hall, and much more. It spans a great area, but is easy enough to walk, if you want to really see and feel the city.

We stayed on the Pest side of the Danube. This seems to be the more active area at least for tourists. The major hotels are along the river with great view of the river and Buda. Nice to walk around day or night.

On the flatter eastern side of the Danube is where you will find the Pest side of Budapest. Many of the city's attractions are on this side, including the Parliament, Heroes Square, St. Stephen's Basilica, and Vaci Utca.
