A longtime favourite of mine in BA depsite many newer, more contemporary and better value places springing up. It's one of the last vestiges of old wealth clinging on to traditional values which seem so deeply unfashionable today. Whereas in the past the voices heard in the lobby would be the Contessa of this with her retinue of dogs, or the Marquesa of that with her shopping bags - today the lingua franca is Russian or Chinese. Even if you don't splurge on spending a night here, I highly recommend popping in for the lavish breakfast or afternoon tea in quite the most picturesque surroundings.

The Alvear Palace Hotel is simply the finest hotel in Buenos Aires. Founded by the Alvear family (the Kennedy's of Argentina) at the turn of the century, the hotel takes up an entire block, and is just breathtaking in appearance.

This hotel is the ultimate in classic luxury. Its in the lovely Recoleta neighborhood, and within walking distance to a ton of great restaurants and shops.
Its beautifully classic and in absolutely perfect condition....its hard to believe it was built in 1932. The service of the staff is beyond attentive...from the Brooklyn born valet out front, to the Front Desk staff, to the restaurant staff and the guy who polished the marble stairs EVERY MORNING! They are so on point. Oh, and did I mention there is a butler on each floor just dying to press your clothes after you arrive? I can't wait to come back to this property....

The Alvear Palace is luxury hotel that was founded in 30's and that was refurbished at 1994, keeping its luxury style.
Is well located at Recoleta, over Alvear avenue, close to Recoleta Mall, the cemetery, numerous restaurants, etc.

The Alvear Palace is gorgeous, luxurious and stunning, as it is supposed to be, but it also feels a bit forced. It is attached to a luxury mall, and kind of incorporates that theme into the hotel, it seems very commercial. While indeed luxurious and exquisitely decorated, it seems a bit ostentatious and the staff were overly friendly, I felt watched like a hawk. Getting to the spa, I got a bit lost both coming and going, as its necessary to walk through a long maze in the basement till you get to the end and find the gym and spa. The spa offers a huge range of amazing, varied treatments. The gym is fitted with a fancy fitness system that requires a video tutorial of how to use it, along with regular machines fitted with dvds and cable. The pool is small, on another floor, in a cozy but cavernous space, with an amazing painted ceiling.

This is one of the most historic hotels in Buenos Aires and the interior is stunning and quite traditional, although I think this place is a bit over-rated. It has a great selection of bars, restaurants and cafes including a tea room and cigar bar. It’s pretty old school and could be a little gaudy and old-fashioned to some people’s taste.
The swimming pool is indoor and not that big at all. It’s quite stuffy and there isn’t much light here. The gym is amazing though with the latest technology equipment. The gym staff are on hand to help and were really friendly. You can spa treatments and massages done here too.
Another thing about the Alvear is that there are shop displays on most available walls which make it seem a little like a mall, not a luxury five-star hotel. The place is impressive though and their afternoon tea is a real treat!

The Alvear Palace hotel is exceptional. I've stayed here and at the Four Seasons and the Alvear Palace is by far the best of the two (though the Four Seasons is also excellent).

Best things about the property:

- history / decor
- exceptional service, including a personal butler service
- location 2 blocks from main sights in Recoleta
- wonderful breakfast / tea at L'Orangerie
- free wireless internet
- Hermes amenities

The Alvear Palace is a Buenos Aires icon and an experience in and of itself. Well worth the room rate. The Four Seasons is also excellent but lacks the history of the Alvear Palace and is a bit far from the main attractions in Recoleta (i.e., a 5-10 min walk instead of a 2 min walk).

Only potential issues / problems:

- the Alvear Palace is a popular place for events / functions and the lobby can get very busy
- a bit formal which may not appeal to everyone
