Local from Buenos Aires

Given how big this hostel was – 70-some rooms, no less – I was surprised to see how calm it was. Young backpackers quietly lounged around the common area, which included a pool table, long wooden, communal tables, and several couches in front of a big-screen TV (playing soccer matches, most of the time). Breakfast is included, which in my book is always a definite plus for a hostel, and there were several kitchens to accommodate all of the guests, but there were no safes, which is a clear downside. I was also a bit unimpressed with the staff, who weren’t particularly friendly. (When I first arrived, I asked if there was a bar and was told there wasn’t. So after I passed in front of a counter that could be nothing else but a bar and asked about it, I was given no explanation. Fine: I didn’t press). It is conveniently located a block away from the Obelisco, but I’d say that’s the only real perk.

This place felt very understaffed and cold. I get that security is an issue for any hostel, but in this one there are two doors in which you must ring a bell and wait for a light to go out so you can come in or out, which got annoying after a while. This was especially annoying when there was only one person on staff and you had to wait a while just to open a door. The common area is large and has a pool table and an upper DVD room with computers guests can use. The one good thing was that the common area was quiet, and this is good whenever you're in a crazy place like downtown Buenos Aires. The halls almost felt like hospital hallways though, and the place wasn't very conducive to socializing. There are probably friendlier hostels in BA where it's easier to meet people and make friends.

I wasn’t impressed by this place at all. The reception staff attended to me whilst looking at the computer screen, which made me feel really unwelcome. The communal area was pretty large, but the place was a bit run down. It could’ve done with a good lick of paint and a few new pieces of art or something on the walls. I like a game of pool and so it was cool to see that feature in the communal area and the kitchen was well-stocked with equipment, but I just didn’t like the staff and I wasn’t comfortable sitting in the communal area because it just didn’t feel like it had been cleaned in a while. I also thought the prices were pretty high considering it was supposed to be a budget/hostel kind of accommodation. I wouldn’t recommend it.

This is one of the best hostels I have ever stayed at. It is really clean and very quaint. The best part is it's location. It is right in the middle of Central Buenos Aires near all the excitement and things to do.

The rooms here are very spacious, as it is set in an old apartment/home that has been renovated to fit a private room hostel. The customer service is amazing. Hubert was very kind slow and explained a lot to us, and smiled the whole time.

The breakfast every morning was good and offered more variety than most hostels, and actually offered fruits.

The only reason I am not giving this place a 5 star is that the over abundance of advertising and pushing of other services. I understand the need for it and it is great for those who do not know what to do yet in Buenos Aires, but it just is not my cup of tea.

I would recommend this place for nearly anyone. It isn't a place to be pampered, but it is definitely top tier when it comes to a hostel. I would place more like a midrange hotel.

I traveled to Buenos Aires for the first time with one of my best friends from college and we wanted to have a little more comfort than the hostels that we were used to staying in so we were immediately lured into Hostel Suites Obelisco because of hardwood floor private rooms we saw on their site. When we checked in, we were extremely pleased with the room because it was clean and modern and reminded us of our rooms back home. The hostel only had shared bathrooms, but only a handful of people had to share the same bathroom. The bathrooms were not spotless, but pretty clean. The common areas on the ground floor were very bright and colorful and the staff was extremely helpful in assisting us with our itinerary and giving us solid directions. The shared spaces had a constant amount of foot traffic, but it never disrupted us. The rooms were not loud, but not quiet either. The hostel is located in a very central area and is literally in the center of BA. This is a good option for first time visitors looking to see a lot of the city since it is close to public transportation and walking distance to a handful of sites. It is also really close to the Obelisco landmark, making it easier to give directions to cab drivers if you struggle with the language barrier.
