Local from Buenos Aires, Argentina

Leon D'Or was the former Syrian embassy to Buenos Aires before it was purchased and turned into a hotel. This is why the rooms are all so different and there are various rates. The elevator was pretty pretty and the rooms are quite basic. Breakfast is optional, but wi-fi and cable TV are all included. The location is really great if you want to stay in Recoleta for a cheap price, but I'd recommend this place to someone who just wants basics covered. This isn't a place for people interested in luxury, spas, or other special treatment. The staff were very friendly and open to giving recommendations or helping you find your way if you get lost. There's nothing to complain about, but nothing too extraordinary either.

I wouldn’t stay here. The place was dark, damp and very uninviting. It’s location isn’t that great either. The hotel is old, definitely dating back to the kind of hotel people would have stayed in at the beginning of the 20th century and it looked like a lot of the original decor was still in place. It seemed that little had been done to renovate or renew or repaint in any way. It was dirty, but just really dark, out-of-date and very uninviting. The guy behind the reception desk was equally as grimy, seemed pretty ill and not at all forthcoming with any information or advice. Anyone who likes this kind of early 1900s hotel style would be better off staying at Hotel Reina, Avenida de Mayo 1120.

From its website, the Lion D'or looks rather fancy, but in reality it's a bit run down. The lobby is nice, but simple and a bit grubby. The kitchen is tiny and extremely basic, containing just a fridge, a microwave, a laundry sink and a few dishes. Breakfast is optional, but very affordable, around $3 US per person, but served at a cafe 2 blocks away, since the residence doesn't have a restaurant. It does have vending machines in the lobby that offer hot coffee and snacks though. The rooms are all different, since it was originally built as an embassy for a middle-eastern country, not as a hotel, and the rates are quite affordable, but not all have AC, so check first. The owner is very nice and helpful, but doesn't speak English. The price is really amazing for the area.

Great location but a little rundown. The hotel is close to lots of historical building, it’s quite central and close to lots of attractions.
The price of the room is value for money and it has everything you need. You have to pay extra for air con which should really be included in the price of the room but at least they give you the option. Cable TV is included. There is a little kitchen but it’s pretty basic mostly just for heating up food and making hot drinks.
The staff is helpful but not overly friendly. Some of the rooms have beautiful original fittings like old fireplaces and chandeliers but others that I peeped a look at are more basic. The whole place has a real ‘Buenos Aires’ feel and the building is old and used to be used as an embassy.
Breakfast is not included in the rate of the room and if you do get it you have to walk round to a separate café which is inconvenient. But generally a good all round experience.
