Swimming hole and sport climbing area. Unfortunately very trafficked and polluted in the summer. But it's fun to scramble around the rock pool and climb behind it! Easy, flat, exposed trail to the pool from the parking lot.

What a great hike that has all kinds of layers and adventures to it. I did the lower east loop that goes through a bunch of epic rock formations (great for rocking climbers), the former set of hit TV show M.A.S.H, and ends with the rock pool where people gather to swim and jump off mini cliffs in the wilderness. I could only imagine how this park looks when there is actually water in the Malibu creek, it was all dried up pretty much when I went except for the rock pool area.

Most of the trail is wide and flat for the most part making it very doable yet still a great workout since it's about 6-7 miles long (roundtrip).

Found this place looking through people's instagrams and it was beautiful. We arrived in the afternoon, hiked, swam in the creek, and began walking back under a gorgeous night sky full of stars.

Who knew there was so much nature right outside LA? It's good for some light hiking and some not-so-light climbing. There's a lake that's popular for swimming in the summertime, but the water's stagnant and a little dubious. Bring layers because, depending if you're in the sun or shade, you never know when you'll be warm one minute and chilly the next.

Only a short driving distance from the urban sprawl of the San Fernando Valley, Malibu Creek State Park offers a small river, a fascinating waterfall, trees, grasslands and a degree of solitude. At one time the land was owned by 20th Century Fox Studios and was the setting for numerous movies and television shows including Planet of the Apes and M*A*S*H.

The wonderful thing about Malibu’s geography is that the town is literally a thin strip of land comprising beach, the Pacific Coast Highway, and the adjacent canyons, so it’s basically a natural paradise. In addition to exploring the coves and tidepools along Malibu’s beaches, there are hiking trails that weave up and around the canyons, permitting you to explore a side of Malibu that very few actually take the time to see. One of the popular trails is through Malibu Creek State Park . Because hiking in Malibu is one of the lesser-known activities, and certainly isn’t sought out by your average tourist, there isn’t a lot of information in Malibu itself, but there is a wealth of information available if you Google “Malibu hiking.” Trust me, the trails are gorgeous and well worth a half day, if you can spare it!

Malibu Creek State Park has hiking, camping, wading, and other outdoor activities, but I went to see the M*A*S*H filming location, about a 2.2 mile moderate hike from the parking lot. Although there's not much there, I liked seeing the familiar hills that formed the backdrop and standing on the helipad above the camp.

This is a nearly perfect park in close vicinity to downtown L.A. and the Valley. Driving up here through the canyon is almost mind-boggling in that it's hard to believe that such a pristine-looking wilderness area can be just a stone's through from L.A. sprawl. Camping, picnic and other facilities are available, and there are a variety of day hikes as well as access to a few, longer backcountry treks. The park has a long history in Hollywood as it was the location for numerous westerns, the original Planet of the Apes and the MASH television series. However, the place feels wild and I've never observed film production set up here in recent years. One spot along the Malibu Creek has become very popular with rock climbers (and also makes a decent swimming hole). There are plenty of deer, birds and rattlesnakes, and less obvious animal residents include mountain lion, mountain sheep and coyotes. This is a good spot to get away for the day if you're seeking the solace of nature but can't roam too far from L.A.
