Know why there is a fence around this place?
People are dying to get in... Sure, this place might just inspire to write awful jokes on line, but don't let that deter you from visiting.

The original landscape cemetery, a beautiful place for a walk any time of year. Originally founded as an arboretum, it holds an extensive collection of mature trees. Many of the monuments are fine sculptures.

Mount Auburn Cemetery was founded in 1831 and is now a National Historic Landmark. It's not just a cemetery, but also a beautiful garden, with much macabre to explore at 174 acres. The cememtery also acts an arboretum, and during open hours there are tours of both the historical and more green aspects. At the top of it's hill, and the tower there, sweeping views of the Cambridge/Boston skyline are beautifully visible. Keeping with an Egyptian Revival style, there is even a sphinx if you look hard enough (or rather, she's not too hard to find). Mount Auburn claims fame for having set off the parks and gardens movement in the US, and its green beauty during the proper season is a clear indication.

If you think it's a good idea to bring your kids here, don't do it. This might be fun for old people, but it's not fun for kids to watch grave and know that dead people are five feet under you. Don't do it!

This is a weirdly pretty cemetery. Reminds me of Parisian cemeteries in that you can just wander around and appreciate how pretty it is. (If you can get past the whole dead people thing, obviously.)

When a friend of mine first proposed that we visit the Mt. Auburn cemetery, I wasn't really sure what to think. I'd heard of the Granary Burial Ground, with Sam Adams and Paul Revere, but not Mt. Auburn. And wouldn't a cemetery be depressing? Not so! The Mt. Auburn cemetery feels more like a park or garden, and I was amazed to discover how peaceful and relaxing it was. You could easily spend hours wandering through the various grave sites and marveling at the magnitude of some of the monuments.

Founded in 1831 as America's first garden cemetery, in my mind, it more than lives up to it. This cemetery was absolutely beautiful. It reminded me more of the cemeteries one sees in Europe than most of the cemeteries you find in the states. It's wonderful to walk through the the Washington Tower in the middle of the cemetery gives you a great view of Boston and the surrounding area.

Mt Auburn is a pretty cemetery in Cambridge, one of the first in the US (apparently) to be built on the park model. There are lots of trees, flower beds and a really cool tower building that gives you panoramic views of the city. Taking a walk in a cemetery might seem a little strange, but Mt Auburn really makes it a lovely experience.
