Great location for walking around the Spoleto Festival. Historically was the Citadel before becoming a hotel.

Suites are quiet as they are two rooms with bedroom farther from the hallway.

Free breakfast included hot items. Happy Hour free wine and nuts and chips snacks.

This is not your typical Embassy Suites scenario for it was built within the walls of the former Citadel. The latter is our renowned military college, the subject of author Pat Conroy’s “Lords of Discipline.” The hallowed walls, with their two towers and multiple arches, form the façade of the hotel. Built in the 1820s as a result of the abortive Denmark Vesey slave uprising, the atrium courtyard sheltered by a glass ceiling, is where cadets in grey uniforms would march. Now it is often set with banquet tables for the many meeting groups that book here. Families like this all-suite property – kids can sleep in the living room, parents get their own bedroom, and then there is the large swimming pool.
I do wish that ES would change the generic furniture package. I like Tobacco Road, their rustic restaurant serving a full, hot breakfast buffet (complimentary) and lunch (not included). Ever so popular is the comp’ wine and cheese reception in the lobby, with its English/West Indies Colonial style. Interestingly, there have been reports of the paranormal, ie. ghosts, also different for an Embassy Suites.

Built on the old Citadel. We had a upper level corner room with a small lookout balcony overlooking Charleston. Its history made it very cool.
