the hotel and knowing the sordid history of the Tip Top Tap. I was surprised to see how modern the Allerton is on the inside. The Tip Top Tap is now a banquet hall, so unless you are attending an event inside, there is really no reason to go see it. The rooms are set up a little strangely, with TVs next to couches instead of in front of them. Although, you could argue that they're designed more for having conversations then watching TV. To be honest, I thought the hotel would be great because the Allerton hotel is a piece of Chicago history, but it is great because it is a well-maintained, safe, and cool and has a great location right in downtown Chicago.

The rooms are a little small and the elevator takes FOREVER. Overall it's a nice hotel.

The historic Allerton is one of my favorite hotels in the entire city. The exterior is composed of white stone and the hotel really looks like it’s been around for quite some time. It’s located right off the Magnificent Mile, so there are tons and tons of shops nearby if you’d like to score some new threads. Same goes for restaurants.

The interior, however, is mostly updated to look much more modern than the exterior. The lobby catches the eye with a checkered floor and a mix of grays and greens, while the staff is on-point and very helpful. The Room was comfortable, and the bed was especially so. I could spend a lot of time in that bed. If you play your cards right, maybe you can also get someone to take you up and see the historic Allerton “Tip Top Tap” neon sign that rests on the roof.

The Allerton may be a sleekly modern boutique hotel now, decorated in rich greys, navy and silver, but underneath the bold graphic prints and contemporary design is a ton of history. Built in 1924, this North Italian Renaissance-style hotel was once the home of the famous 1950s Don McNeill's Breakfast Club radio show, and also the location of the swanky Tip Top Tap lounge. While the Tip Top Tap has been long closed, you can still sip a cocktail by the fireplace at the M Avenue Lounge, or grab a bite to eat at the in-house restaurant.

The Allerton Hotel is surprisingly difficult to find from street level. I knew right where it should be, but I was standing across Michigan Avenue and couldn't see a sign. It's a good thing my phone's GPS told me I was in the right place or I might have walked right past it.

The lobby is lush--it made me feel like I ought to have been wearing 4 inch heels instead of snow boots. This is the kind of place you want to sit with a martini and a good looking man.

The front desk staff was really friendly (perhaps asked a few too many personal questions, though) while the security guard I ran into in the tiny elevator was the opposite. I guess security guards aren't supposed to be chatty, right?

The rooms are cool, soothing, with a silvery/grey color scheme and marble fixtures. Very nice.

I've seen the Allerton Hotel sign for years when I lived in Chicago but never had a reason to stay there. I finally did, surprised at the affordable prices. The rooms are small but otherwise fine for the people who are out and about.

Right on the famous Magnificent Mile, the Allerton Hotel stands tall above upscale shops like Stuart Weitzman and Brooks Brothers. The lobby doesn't look like much when you first walk in, but after you reach the registration desk on the second floor, you enter a beautiful room with marble floors and the lovely M Restaurant with its lovely decor in black, white and green.

The decor is kept modern throughout the hotel in geometrical shapes and pops of color. The rooms leave space for a nice little sitting area along with large, well-kept beds that I almost didn't want to mess up. They also keep it up-to-date with iHomes and big flat-screen TVs. Even though it's on the older side, you can't really tell because of the all the modern features.
