A stunning museum that proves architecture and design can be a spiritual experience. We were blown away by the combination of modern design with ruins, how light and the right placement are used to render the meaning of relics. It's without a doubt one of the unique museum experience we've shared.

This art museum is extraordinary. Built around the ruins of a church destroyed during WWII, it has done an amazing job of wrapping itself around the ruins so visitors can see a bit of it as well as enjoy the great collection of religious iconography that spans centuries.

Kolumba is in my opinion an extraordinary art museum and dedicated the Archdiocese of Cologne. It allows the visitor to experience two millennia of western culture in a single building by its distinctive architecture. The modern building is designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor (2007) who merged both the Gothic ruins of St Kolumba and Böhm's chapel »Madonna in the Ruins« (1950) with the unique archaeological excavation site (1973-76). Kolumba is an open space and inspire me everytime...

Kolumba is one of the tiny number of buildings by Peter Zumthor in the world, which automatically would make it a site worth seeing. His treatment of the old church ruins and perforated stone walls is awe-inspiring. However, the exhibitions here are also worth seeing - often esoteric but usually something you've never seen before.

Kolumba is the art museum of the Archdiocese of Cologne. While the museum is a wonderful collection of ancient pieces up to moden art, the absolute beauty of the place is the building itself. The museum's location is on the ruins of the church of St.Kolumba with the new structure built up, out, and around the broken brick and old wood. Inside you can walk out over the ruins. The building was designed by the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. It is a bit tricky to find but is only a 15 min walk or so from the Cathedral. The church is free to enter. If you want a unique architectural and historical experience of Cologne and by extension Germany, visit Kolumba Kunstmuseum.
